Florence's success story: Securing a graduate role at Marks & Spencer

Created on 30 Sep 2024

Florence is a Philosophy graduate from the University of York. She's secured a graduate role as an Assistant Copywriter at Marks and Spencer through Bright Network.

First, we’d love to for you to tell us a little about yourself.

“I have always known I'd like a career in writing, but I wasn't sure how to get into one. When I was younger, I dreamt of being a travel writer however it seemed so hard to get into, but I think this new role is definitely a step in the right direction!

I wanted to go to university, specifically York, because I loved the idea of exploring a new city and York was an amazing city to live in - especially the campus being so green!

It was hard going during Covid lockdown, however I was lucky to have a great experience and meet brilliant friends who constantly support me.”

What motivated you to apply for the role?

“I love writing, I love food and I love M&S - it seemed like the perfect opportunity for me.

In fact, I wanted it so much I convinced myself I wasn't going to get it. When I got the call, I was so shocked and absolutely over the moon.”

What was the application process like?

“I submitted a cover letter, CV and I chose to create a digital portfolio of work I have produced before which I think helped me to be noticed.

After I received an invitation to attend an interview and had to complete a behavioural assessment beforehand.

Following my interview, I was given a copywriting task to produce which I think is the main component of the application process. I really enjoyed the process and found each step to be carefully thought out. I was surprised I didn't have an in-person interview before I got the job offer.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“By providing me with a toolkit to complete job applications, practice interview questions, enhance my cover letter and to most importantly, find a role that I know I am going to love and enjoy!”

What are most proud of about your journey?

“I'm proud of my resilience. I didn't think I had the skills or experience to get my dream opportunity and I was completely shocked when I found out I had received an offer for the job.

Even when I wasn't sure in my ability, I tried my hardest for each interview and went above and beyond in each step of the process.”

What have you learned from going through the process?

"I have learnt to never doubt my own ability and to give everything my all. By going above and beyond in each step e.g. creating a digital portfolio and reaching out to recruiters on LinkedIn, I made myself stand out which is why I believe I was given the opportunity to interview in the first place.

When recruiters just see you as a CV, they look if you tick their boxes but as soon as they meet you and put a face to a name, I believe you have a much better opportunity to succeed in the role.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“I would say to give it your all. These people looking at your application don't know you and if you don't make yourself stand out, then they will never know you.

I took extra steps and connected with the recruiters on Linked In, researched them before the interview so I could ask personalised questions, created a digital portfolio to make myself stand out and emailed them straight after the interview so I would stay in their minds.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I'm so excited to start the role. I’m also excited to develop a new routine after university and to one day move to London. That has always been my dream, so this is one step closer to getting there!

Also, I’m looking forward to the M&S discount!"
