Wessex Water is a regional water and sewerage company, serving a large area of the South West, covering 10,000 square kilometres, including Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, most of Wiltshire and parts of Gloucestershire and Hampshire.

We are recognised by the water industry regulator, Ofwat, as the most efficient water and sewerage company in England and Wales.

The Role

We are looking to develop better network (pipeline) modelling tools to improve drinking water quality, specifically to reduce incidents of discoloured water caused by hydraulic flow events, eg, water main bursts.

Such tools would bring together the various root causes and trigger mechanisms that cause the regeneration and mobilisation of materials causing discolouration, applying the latest industry research involving water chemistry, microbiology and hydraulics to real world challenges.

This will be used to inform and optimise our multi-million pound operational and capital maintenance strategy plans both in the short and long term (five to 25 years).

About you

We are looking for someone with a strong interest in data science and mathematics who is able to use (or willing to learn) R or Python programming.

To be successful, alongside studying a science, environmental, engineering or maths-based subject, you will:

  • understand and sort large volumes of data and information in various formats
  • work flexibly and enjoy making a difference
  • produce reports and communicate with colleagues at all levels of seniority.

Interview

You will be required to attend an interview before receiving an offer. The purpose of this interview will be to get to know you while determining a rough plan for your placement year.

At interview you will be given an overview of the company and the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. The initial interview will last approximately one hour; you may be called for a further interview.

Benefits
