Job purpose

Wessex Water currently uses approximately 2800 Openreach PSTN lines to communicate to its telemetry outstations. As of 2025, the PSTN network across the UK will be withdrawn from service. A programme team has been formed to deliver a major infrastructure upgrade, ensuring our telemetry communication system remains operational.

What you'll do

As a Graduate Engineer you will:

  • undertake site surveys and produce electrical and ICA designs, drawings and specifications which are required for each individual site’s solution delivery
  • assist the Lead Project Engineer (LPE) in identifying the IT/OT/ICA project phases and elements, as well as highlighting the resources required to enable project delivery
  • write reports and specification requirements
  • assist the LPE in troubleshooting post installation issues on site
  • assist the LPE in the preparation of cost estimates, programmes and procurement schedules where required
  • liaise with key stakeholders, such as operations, IT and third-party contractors and suppliers to ensure all equipment is fit for purpose.
  • assist the LPE in monitoring project progress, coordinating activities and resolving problems.
  • work closely with the technical administration teams in preparing and issuing appropriate takeover packages.

What do I need?

To be successful you will be confident, adaptable and happy to work as part of a team, as well as the initiative to deliver individual tasks to time and budget constraints.

You will have a willingness to learn new technology, a can-do attitude and a flexible approach. You will also be comfortable challenging the norm and contributing to the successful delivery of MEICA services to Wessex Water.

In addition, we are looking for:

  • recently educated to degree level in an electrical, telecommunication or mechatronic discipline
  • the ability to apply theory to practice in the field
  • great organisational skills and confident decision-making ability
  • excellent presentation, IT and communication skills.

The role will involve working on telemetry systems, operational technology and different types of communication pathways. Previous experience or study in these areas is desirable but not essential.

Interview

You will be required to attend an interview before receiving an offer. The purpose of this interview will be to give you an overview of the company and the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. The initial interview will last approximately one hour; you may be called for a further interview.
