    With a close-knit team of around 230 colleagues including 26 Partners across offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, Turcan Connell’s comprehensive service covers everything required for efficient tax, estate and succession planning and advises on the many aspects of land and property management and transactions. We also handle the complexities of divorce and family law, employment law and dispute resolution advice as well as providing a range of business law services to our clients.

    The role

    We have an opportunity for a full-time permanent Tax Assistant to join our Tax Team in our Edinburgh office. The full-time hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, 33.75 hours per week. The role will principally be based in our Edinburgh office although we support a hybrid working approach. We are also open to either part-time or full-time candidates.

    As a Tax Assistant you will prepare and complete Personal, Trust and Estate Return forms and provide advice and assistance to clients and trustees in relation to Income Tax and Capital Gains tax matters. You will ensure correct tax returns are prepared and submitted to HMRC within time limits. This will include preparing returns for individuals, trusts, estates, and charities.

    The successful candidate will prepare and check schedules of dividends, complete Capital Gains Tax calculations and maintain and up-date the Capital Gains Tax records and other appropriate records. You will lodge tax returns and agree correct tax liabilities with the HMRC within time limits and ensure clients are advised of their tax payments and repayments position and check that such payments or repayments are made/received, as necessary.

    As a Tax Assistant you will also review own clients regularly to ensure files, section records and other matters, including feeing tax matters, are up-to-date and annually review the client’s affairs against a check list to consider if tax mitigation is possible and provide pro-active tax advice on the mitigation of tax liabilities.

    You will also maintain up to date knowledge of relevant tax legislation and rules.

    Skills and qualifications

    Previous tax administration or experience in a similar role is required and knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages is essential. You should have strong processing skills, be numeric and a high degree of accuracy is essential. You are expected to be a strong team player who also has the ability to work on their own initiative with minimum supervision. Successful candidates will preferably be ATT qualified or currently studying the ATT but this is not essential. There is the opportunity to undertake professional tax qualifications.
