Your role

As a UTC Engineer, you will be involved in many exciting projects, including cycling and walking initiatives and public transport projects (such as the Greater Manchester Bee Network and Quality Bus Transit) as well as helping to deliver TfGMs vision as set out in our 2040 Strategy.

You will also be involved in designing and implementing adaptive signal networks and will work alongside experienced Urban Traffic Control Engineers, allowing you to develop in your role.

Occasionally you will also be required to work out of office hours including at weekends to help manage traffic at events.

Who are we?

Greater Manchester is embarking on an exciting period of transition and evolving with a growing population and economy. Transport for Greater Manchester manage the largest number of traffic signals outside London. The challenge of managing such a large conurbation offers the opportunity to gain a wide breadth of experience.

The Infrastructure Design Group (IDG) team are responsible for the design, installation, and maintenance of traffic signal installations across Greater Manchester. They work closely with a variety of organisations, including the local authorities, walking and cycling groups, bus operators, tram operators, and many more. In this team you would contribute to the geometric design of new and existing traffic signal-controlled junctions and take a role in developing design solutions at junctions that cater for all transport modes, including walking and cycling.

The Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). team manage the operation of the traffic signals across Greater Manchester. In addition to formulating plans for day-to-day operation they also develop and implement strategic plans for events such as premiership and international football matches at the Etihad and Old Trafford Stadiums, large concerts, and roadwork schemes. The ITS team also carry out junction modelling, working closely with the IDG team to develop innovative signal solutions. The team also provides advice to the districts of Greater Manchester regarding development proposals.

What you’ll bring

You will be keen to develop your knowledge of the principles of traffic and transportation and have experience of using computer systems for data related to modelling.  You will have an enquiring mind with the ability to use numbers and data to analyse and provide solutions to complex problems and create reports with the flexibility to adapt to changing workload demands and new organisational challenges.

You will also have a degree, MSc, BTEC, HND or HNC in an engineering discipline, science, maths, geography or similar.

This is a career graded role, the salary for this role is £31,915 - £36,683 per annum for entry at Graduate Level 1 and £39,360 – £43,817 per annum for more experienced candidates entering at Engineer Level 2, both depending on skills and experience.
