The division of Research IT provides research-focussed, specialist computing infrastructure, software engineering, data science, application support and training to researchers across a wide range of domains, who have diverse technical requirements. The Research Software Engineering department within Research IT is responsible for providing a range of software engineering services including engineering, consultancy and training. The role
This role is aimed at undergraduate science and engineering students already studying at degree-awarding institutions in the UK who are seeking a “Year in Industry” placement for 12-months as part of their programme.
This role is an exciting opportunity to spend 12 months working full-time in our thriving Research Software Engineering department within Research IT at The University of Manchester. As a trainee Research Software Engineer (RSE), you will work with several of our experienced RSEs on a range of real research projects, developing and delivering software applications and tools to academic research groups across our faculties and cultural institutions.
You will work on multiple projects, from weeks to months in duration, from conception to completion, getting to the heart of some of the world’s most important challenges and applying cutting-edge knowledge through software. This may involve gathering requirements, designing, building, testing, deploying, documenting and maintaining software in a wide range of domains. This role is designed to expose you to as much of our software engineering operation as possible and provide you with variety and opportunities to learn web development, AI/machine learning software development, and even writing software for GPUs or supercomputers.
The person
The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate:
- Currently in the second year of a relevant undergraduate degree at an accredited UK university.
- Experience in software application development using a modern Object-Oriented Programming language such as Java, Python, or C#.
- Strong organisational and communications skills and the ability to adapt to different audiences.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to pick up and adapt to new concepts quickly.
- Experience of a modern application development framework such as Spring (Java), Django (Python), .NET MAUI (C#).
- Experience of software engineering tools and processes, such as version control, linting, testing, test-driven development, continuous integration.
- Experience of developing software in a team environment.
