As a Distribution and Transmission Network Operator, SP Energy Networks keeps the electricity flowing to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire. One of only six Distribution Operators and one of four Transmission Operators in the UK, our actions are crucial to the decarbonisation of the network. The energy landscape is changing fast as the way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy evolves. Our role is to decarbonise our network through technology and innovation to support the journey to Net Zero. We need to maximise the efficiency of our network to optimise the transmission and distribution of electricity generated from renewables, reducing electricity losses, and allowing us to move away from fossil fuels. With great power comes great responsibility – but we’re up for the challenge!

    What you’ll be doing

You will be at the forefront of a transformative movement in the energy industry. With distribution networks originally designed for predictable and stable demand, it is now imperative that we upgrade our network to accommodate the extensive changes in electricity demand, generation, and consumer behaviour. You will contribute to the planning, design, implementation, and maintenance of electrical distribution and transmission networks. Working closely with experienced engineers and technicians, you will have the opportunity to learn from their expertise and gain valuable hands-on experience in the field. This will include tasks such as installing new substations, overhead lines, and underground cables.

As you gain experience in the field, you will also obtain authorisations that will enable you to work towards becoming a Senior Authorized Person (SAP), allowing you to take on more responsibilities and make critical decisions regarding the operation and maintenance of the electrical network. Furthermore, you will work with our engineers on innovation initiatives that aim to minimise our carbon footprint and optimise energy efficiency. By designing and maintaining infrastructure that supports clean energy generation and distribution, our team ensures that electricity is delivered to homes, businesses, and communities in a sustainable manner.

Your work will play a vital role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of electricity to customers, contributing to the advancement of the energy industry and the transition towards a sustainable future. We want you to drive outstanding innovation through creative ideas to help us deliver a smarter and more sustainable network for our customers. During your two-year IET-accredited programme, you will have the opportunity to carry out between four and six placements, wherein you’ll gain exposure to projects across the whole project lifecycle and explore your areas of interest.

    What you’ll bring

With a combination of technical and soft skills, you'll be well-equipped to excel in your engineering career and make a significant impact in your field. Effective teamwork and collaboration are essential for successful project implementation and achieving common goals, particularly in energy projects that involve multidisciplinary teams. As an Engineering Graduate, your problem-solving and analytical skills, honed through your academic studies, will be instrumental in tackling complex challenges. As you’ll be required to travel to site, often in remote areas, you’ll need a driving licence (or be working towards it). Finally, you’ll have an Honours Degree at a minimum of 2:2 (or equivalent) in Electrical, Mechanical, or Energy Engineering (or similar).

    What’s in it for you

You’ll receive many benefits and advantages such as career growth and development. This role provides you with a solid foundation for a successful career in the energy sector. You will have the opportunity to work on diverse projects and gain valuable experience whilst contributing to the development of critical national infrastructure. This hands-on experience will allow you to develop a strong skill set and open doors to exciting career opportunities. There’s never a dull moment - with a wide variety of tasks that will keep you busy. And with involvement in various aspects of engineering, including project management, design, build, and maintenance, the role diversity ensures that each day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth.

We are committed to supporting your professional growth and will support you in completing the necessary attributes to work towards a professional chartership with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or equivalent bodies. This recognition and professional qualification will enhance your career prospects and demonstrate your commitment to the profession.

You will have the opportunity to contribute to the achievement of Net Zero. We’re dedicated to securing affordable and clean energy and as an engineer, you will play a vital role in developing sustainable infrastructure that supports this goal. This allows you to make a meaningful impact on creating a sustainable future for generations to come. It’s an exciting and rewarding role that allows you to make a positive impact in the energy sector while advancing your career in Engineering.
