nucleargraduates is on a mission to create a diverse pipeline of future talent for the nuclear industry.
Whether your passion lies within science, engineering or business, the nucleargraduates programme will ensure that during your two years with us, you will gain an invaluable insight into the nuclear sector, taking on challenges and having the opportunity to make a real difference.
Upon completion of the two-year programme you will take up a substantive role within your sponsoring organisation. The sponsoring organisation for this opportunity is the Environment Agency.
The Sponsoring Organisation
Established in 1996, the aim of the Environment Agency is to protect and improve the environment.
Within England, the Environment Agency is responsible for:
- Regulating major industry and waste
- Treatment of contaminated land
- Water quality and resources
- Fisheries
- Inland river, estuary and harbour navigations
- Conservation and ecology
- Managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea
The priorities of the Environment Agency are to:
- Work with businesses and other organisations to manage the use of resources
- Increase the resilience of people, property and businesses to the risks of flooding and coastal erosion
- Protect and improve water, land and biodiversity
- Improve the way they work as a regulator to protect people and the environment and support sustainable growth
The Environment Agency offers developmental opportunities to help graduates achieve their potential through on-the-job, structured learning and industry secondments. In addition, they encourage development through professional qualification routes too.
The Role of a Physicist
As a physicist on the nucleargraduates programme you can expect to find yourself:
- Supporting with the regulation of nuclear sites - from design and construction, to operation and finally through to decommissioning
- Monitoring the management and disposal of radioactive waste
- Working on the processing of nuclear waste or working with radioactive materials
- Contributing to the collation of information and advice to support decision making
- Providing technical support to plant operations
- Conducting data analysis and generating reports
- Working closely with internal and external stakeholders such as the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, regulators and local stakeholders

Minimum Eligibility
- A minimum of a 2:2 in Physics or a related degree subject, achieved within the last 5 years
- Have the full right to work in the UK (please note we are unable to sponsor visas or accept those with a Graduate visa as candidates will be unable complete the full duration of the programme)
