We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Corporate Paralegal with a specialism in Data Protection to join our in-house legal team on an initial six-month maternity cover contract. This role is critical in ensuring the company’s compliance with data protection laws and providing broad legal support across various business areas. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in corporate governance, contract management, compliance, dispute resolution, and legal administration.

Role accountabilities
Corporate Governance & Company Secretarial Support
- Maintain corporate records, including statutory registers and internal documents such as organisational structure charts.
- Prepare and file documents with Companies House, including annual confirmation statements, director appointments and resignations, share allotments and transfers, and other statutory filings.
- Draft and manage board minutes, resolutions, and governance documents.
- Support corporate transactions, such as M&A due diligence and integration work.
Data protection
- Oversee and manage the business’s compliance with data protection laws.
- Review and draft Data Processing Agreements (DPAs), Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs), and data protection clauses in contracts.
- Conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and other related assessments, such as Legitimate Interests Assessments (LIAs).
- Manage and respond to subject access requests (SARs), erasure and opt-out requests, and other data protection-related queries.
- Investigate and manage data breaches, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements, including reporting to the Information Commissioners Office (ICO) if required.
- Draft, review, and manage information governance policies to align with legal and regulatory frameworks.
- Support internal stakeholders with training and awareness initiatives on data protection and information security best practices.
Legal administration compliance
- Maintain legal records, track legal work, and compile departmental statistics and logs.
- Manage and triage the legal and data protection mailboxes, responding to general legal queries from internal and external stakeholders.
- Conduct legal research on data protection, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and other legal areas as required.
- Support the management of intellectual property, including trademarks and domain registrations across the Group’s portfolio of companies.
- Monitor and report on compliance matters, including anti-bribery and corruption policies, risk registers, and rules of engagement.
- Assist other members of the legal team as required from time to time.
- Assist with other industry-specific matters, such as partnerships and competition laws.
Contract management negotiation
- Assist in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts and other legal documents (e.g., NDAs, service agreements, supplier contracts).
- Support internal stakeholders through the contracting process, ensuring compliance with internal policies and approval workflows.
- Manage contract lifecycle administration, including version control, execution, and renewal tracking.
Risk Management: Insurance & Dispute Resolution
- Assist with annual insurance renewal in collaboration with brokers and internal stakeholders.
- Support claims handling, liaising with insurers and legal representatives as needed.
- Assist in dispute resolution, including:
- Pre-litigation: Investigating disputes, drafting responses, and engaging with counterparties to seek early resolution.
- Litigation support: Assisting the broader team with case management once proceedings are issued, including preparing documents, liaising with external counsel, and tracking deadlines.
- Discovery and evidence gathering: Assisting with document review, disclosure processes, and compiling evidence for litigation.
Skills and experience
- Legal and Data Protection Expertise – Strong knowledge of UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018.
- Corporate & Commercial Law – Experience in contract drafting, corporate governance, and dispute resolution.
- Legal Administration – Highly organised, with experience in record-keeping, regulatory filings, and compliance monitoring.
- Stakeholder Engagement – Excellent communication skills, with the ability to liaise with internal teams, external counsel, and regulators.
- Attention to Detail – Strong analytical skills with the ability to review legal documents thoroughly.
- Project Management – Ability to prioritise tasks, manage competing deadlines, and work efficiently under pressure.
- Legal background (paralegal, compliance, or corporate governance experience) with a legal qualification such as a Law degree, Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDip), or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a data protection role (e.g., Data Protection Officer, Data Privacy Specialist) preferred.
- Experience in an in-house legal team within a corporate or regulatory environment is advantageous.
- Knowledge of insurance claims handling and compliance frameworks is a plus.
- Proficiency in legal research and document drafting.
