Leicester City Council is a large local authority providing a wide range of services, spending £1bn per year. It plays a major role in city life, involved in everything from caring for the elderly and disabled, protecting vulnerable children, and promoting public health to collecting refuse, running schools, maintaining the city’s roads, and managing 20,000 homes. It develops regeneration projects and has invested substantially in the city’s infrastructure in recent years.

Successful candidates will study for the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) Professional Accountancy Qualification (PQ). At the end of the training programme, we hope to offer successful trainees a permanent position, at a qualified accountant’s salary. Most former trainees have since forged successful careers; with one going on to becoming our Chief Operating Officer.

What you’ll be doing

The successful candidates will work on real projects, learn from a range of experienced professionals, and take on more challenges as they progress.

You'll complete a programme of work placements in different sections of the department, enabling you to learn all aspects of financial management and gain the skills and knowledge to become a well-rounded accountant in our vibrant team.

In addition, you will attend college at least once a week and will be assigned a work-based mentor who will assist and support you with your portfolio.

What you’ll need

The role of the council’s finance department is crucial. We need to ensure we have the right managers and leaders in the future. The ideal candidate will have the confidence, drive and ambition to become a future leader.
