Product engineering: hardware and mechatronics graduate programme

Hardware and Mechatronics is at the heart of all our vehicles. It’s fundamental to how we address the ever-evolving engineering landscape and the challenges it brings. At JLR, our vehicle dynamics and off-road capability really sets us apart, but our remit spans much farther than that. From mechanical design through to integration and systems engineering, we deliver outstanding customer experiences that bring modern luxury to life.

We deliver safety-critical, high-performing and high-quality systems thanks to the creative expertise of our people and the world-class tools and processes we use. As a Hardware and Mechatronics graduate, you’ll support us throughout the design and verification process by utilising both Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) to deliver engineering specifications. You’ll use state-of-the-art engineering equipment and software to help you design the electromechanical control systems of the future.

During this two-year long programme, you could be working across a number of specialisms – rotating through different teams, building cross-functional relationships and collaborating with different stakeholders as you deliver innovative engineering solutions.

Below you can find out more about the teams you could be working in. Which team you’re placed in will depend on your personal preferences and business needs.

Engineering body chassis (EBC) team

The EBC team are responsible for most of what you see and touch in our cars. We work closely with JLR’s creative studios to translate award-winning concepts into engineering reality while factoring in things like performance, manufacturability, sustainability, cost and weight. If you join this team, you’ll be responsible for developing real-world engineering solutions. You’ll learn how to use tools, engineering methodologies and techniques to create and optimise impressive engineering solutions – working on new products and enhancing our current ones. This role will raise your profile across the business as you collaborate with different stakeholders, accelerating your development as an engineer and preparing you for the engineering landscape of tomorrow.

Engineering operations (EO) team

Engineering Operations underpins technical innovation and product delivery with modern tools and processes, and specialist technical services. We deliver world-class products thanks to our diverse team who work on everything from project management and data analytics through to building and testing prototypes. We’re involved at every stage of the engineering process, helping JLR to transform the way we engineer and deliver our products.

If you join us, you’ll rotate through a variety of divisions within the Engineering Operations team, collaborating on business-critical projects and working with state-of-the art technology. You’ll have the opportunity to take on different responsibilities that match your skill set and interests, and you’ll be supported by a mentor every step of the way. The work you do in Engineering Operations will have a real impact on our product development cycle and places you at the forefront of exciting new technologies in the propulsion space.

Engineering research (er) team

In short, we enable JLR to transition into a sustainable business where modern luxury and new technology come together.

We’re based at the University of Warwick campus within the National Automotive Innovation Centre, so we have access to amazing collaborative spaces, a large engineering hall, and multiple laboratories and workshops. This means we’re surrounded by innovation – working in the perfect environment to support us as we prove our theories and explore new technologies for the automotive industry.
