About the role
As a police officer, you will work across an increasingly diverse community and face an ever-changing criminal landscape. Whether working as a uniformed officer or detective, you’ll be part of in an increasingly diverse workforce, and develop the skills and knowledge to deal with new and emerging types of crime, such as cybercrime, as well as high-harm offences like domestic abuse.

Salary and Benefits

That’s why Hampshire has chosen to have the highest starting salary of any force in the South East, with new recruits currently joining on more than £24,000 plus allowances and benefits. As you develop your skills, this can rise to more than £40,000 after seven years as a police constable.

Academic Entry Criteria for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA)
The minimum requirements for entry on to the PCDA are:
- A minimum of one A level at grade A* - C (56-32 UCAS points) in any subject or a level 3 qualification that is of an equivalent depth and breadth as an A level. (The UCAS Calculator allows you to enter the qualification to review if the qualification meets the minimum 32 UCAS Tariff Points). Please note AS Levels are not an acceptable alternative.
- A grade C or above/4 or higher in Maths and English GCSE (or an acceptable equivalent Level 2 qualification in Maths and English) at the point of applying. Please note: If you are otherwise qualified and eligible, but don’t hold Maths and English qualifications, we will allow you to undertake your Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications during the recruitment process. These need to be evidenced before you start in role. There will be a period of time between your conditional offer and your final offer to complete these qualifications with a maximum time allowed of 9 months between these two points.
Applicants without level 3 qualifications but with the required Math and English qualifications can be considered if:
- You have previously served in the military or armed forces, or similar law enforcement agency, and have successfully completed the minimum term of service and have an exemplary reference (previous service in military or armed forces is a minimum of 2 years within the last 5 years).
or
- You have previously served in another emergency service (this includes Special, PCSO or other operational roles in another Police force) and have an exemplary reference. (Previous service in an emergency service is a minimum of 2 years within the last 5 years and have worked in an operational role.)
or
- You are an internal member of staff who has completed their probation period.
or
- You have gained a Certificate in Knowledge of Policing
Other essential criteria for the Police Constable Degree apprenticeship (PCDA) Programme
- Full Manual Driving Licence required at the point of application
- You must be committed to working in Hampshire & Isle of Wight

Next steps in the process
The initial stages of the recruitment process are online, so you don’t need to worry about your safety or that of others in the current situation. Once you have registered you will receive an eligibility screening link from the recruitment team to check your eligibility against the national standards for policing, and the academic standards for the course. If you meet these you will be invited to complete an online assessment.
Those successful following the online assessments will go forward for further selection processes including a further National Online Assessment.
Success at all parts of the process may lead to a conditional job offer subject to the required pre-employment checks (vetting, medical, references, fitness test, etc).
Any applicants who already possess a valid National Recruitment Assessment Centre (SEARCH / Day one) pass must still apply under the above process, successfully pass the local assessments (and complete pre-employment checks).

Location of Work
As a Police Officer you could be “posted” (required to work) anywhere within Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. You must be willing and able to travel to a work base in these locations. At first, you will be based at one of our training venues which is a minimum of 9 weeks with further training and tutoring in other locations continuing from this. Please note accommodation is not provided at our training venues and during this period and you will be required to make your own travel arrangements.
Annual Leave in your First Year
During your first year of service you will be expected to take your annual leave during planned breaks in your training. If you have existing holiday plans booked this will not stop you from applying for this role but, if successful, you may not be able to start your training until you can commit to attending the whole training programme for your first full year of service.
