In this role you will be undertaking synthetic organic chemistry experiments to support process improvements, route changes, mimic plant conditions for new chemical entities, impurity synthesis and impurity process mapping, etc.

    Key roles and responsibilities

    • Developing process improvements to existing manufacturing processes to maximise yields, reduce cycle times, processing costs and to minimise waste.
    • Redeveloping processes in order to improve process safety and maintain compliance with modern REACH regulations.
    • Improving process understanding and process robustness
    • Synthesising novel analytical impurity standards.
    • Supporting and troubleshooting processing issues encountered during the manufacture of commercial products.

You will be applying the skills you already have and developing new skills such as; team working, problem solving and building relationships. You will work with and learn from an experienced team of analysts and scientists; they will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.

During your placement you will gain valuable experience as a process chemist including:

    • The routine use of laboratory equipment including automated CLR equipment (LARA and ATLAS systems).
    • Learning key laboratory procedures including reaction set up, distillations, crystallisations, drying, and column chromatography purification techniques.
    • The use of search engines including SciFinder to conduct literature searches to aid process development.
    • Analysing test results, data and writing technical reports
    • The use and interpretation of key analytical techniques including HPLC, NMR, LCMS, IR and Karl Fischer.

You will also gain practical experience in spectroscopic characterisation (NMR/ FTIR and MS), reaction monitoring (open access HPLC), COSHH and the regulatory aspects inherent in an active pharmaceutical environment.

    Degree Requirements

Must be studying an undergraduate degree in Chemistry.
