The role
Global Supply Chain management is all about ensuring we can supply our lifesaving and life-enhancing products to people around the globe. Making sure that the right products arrive at the right time in the right place is no easy task!
We offer a wide variety of supply chain placements, from forecasting demand, production planning, raw materials management, to warehousing and supply chain logistics. Wherever you are based, you’ll be getting stuck in and playing a key part in ensuring our products reach our patients and consumers in an efficient and timely manner.
During your placement you could be involved in a range of activities, such as:
- Project management – leading and delivering improvement projects
- Working with suppliers, customers, and colleagues from around the world
- Data analysis and reporting
- Distribution chains for complex products that require changing temperature for sensitive goods
- Demand review (including gathering and understanding market intelligence on forecasts and supply chain complexities)
- Inventory management
- Building strong relationships with key third-party suppliers
You will be applying the skills you already have learnt at university and developing new skills such as team working, effective communication and time management. You will work with and learn from an experienced, multi-disciplined team who will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.

Please note, these are distinct placements and so when you reach the written application stage you will be able to select preferences of where you would like to be placed if successful. GSK External Supply, GSK House
External Supply within the Global Supply Chain (GSC) is an integral component of the end-to-end supply chain enabling commercial ambition through leveraging a trusted Contract Manufacturing Organisation (CMO) network that provides access to technology platforms and markets to optimise supply and delivering benefits to our patients.
External Supply has 10 vacancies for IP students making it one of the largest communities of “same discipline” placement students in the GSK network. ES has opportunities in several teams including Quality, Oncology, Projects, Procurement, ES Risk, Compliance and Operations and Supply Strategy. You will also get to work with external stakeholders. The exact nature of your role will depend on the team you join, but a wide variety of experiences are available; the size of the group allows for flexibility of development and collaboration across different roles.
As a Business and Supply Chain placement student within External Supply your responsibilities may include:
- Developing an understanding of the risks that lie across the business and learning to use tools to track risks and ensure adherence to process.
- Supporting members of the team to collate and analyse data and looking for insights in the data to enable more informed business decision making.
- Participating in Management Monitoring related activities such as utilising the tools for schedule adherence, monitoring the progress of reports completion and actions assigned following Management Monitoring inspections.
- Involvement in development and implementation of new processes in ES and initiatives as part of continuous improvement in the business.
- Supporting to the global operational supply teams who manage the day-to-day relationship with our CMOs to ensure efficient, timely and reliable supply of products.
- Assisting with the development of business cases and financial estimates, developing and tracking project plans to implementation, and managing internal and external stakeholder engagement throughout the project including quotations, supplier evaluations and continuous improvement opportunities, as well as spend and savings analysis.
- Supporting the recording, monitoring, and trending Key Quality Performance Indicators (KPI) to help developing improved reporting, audits, and review of procedures.
Other opportunities include participating in a charity event where the ES placement students will be tasked to work together, and project manage fundraising throughout the year for the Save the Children fund. In addition to the above, opportunities exist to visit different manufacturing sites around the UK (e.g., Stevenage, Irvine) and learn from industry experts allowing for greater development opportunities across disciplines and sites.
GSK General Medicine, GSK House
Roles exist in the General Medicine global planning team, who support day to day supply chain activity for Classic Established Products and / or Global Health Assets. In addition to working with external partners these roles provide a great opportunity to work with functions such as Legal, Global Affair, ViiV commercial. To be successful in the General Medicine role, effective communication skills and stakeholder management is key.
Working in the Classic Established Products team will give you the opportunity to support and ensure continuity of supply of our life-enhancing medications. You will have a wide variety of experiences ranging from supporting the monthly Sales &Operational Planning process to learning the concepts of balancing of cost and cash with service targets, work closely with site/global functions to deliver a supply plan that is balanced across multiple franchises as well as cash, cost and service. You will be involved in capacity planning and stock and inventory management.
The responsibility of the Global Health Asset team is to drive GSK Trust agenda with leading Supranational organisations such as WHO, UNICEF, MSF etc. You will have a wide variety of experience from supporting and leading new global health product launch in new markets to supporting and leading the product supply to remote markets including sanction countries. You will also be involved in establishing standard ways of working with key Supranational organisations.
