Trading & Shipping is bp's face to the commodities markets including oil, gas, power, emissions, and finance. Our role is to enhance performance and maximise value for bp’s assets through distinctive supply, commodity trading, data analytics and risk management; underpinned by a world-class finance, control and compliance infrastructure. 

Trading & Shipping – Internship Programme 

Our 11-week paid internship programme is designed to give you maximum exposure to our Trading & shipping business. You will be working on projects with real impact to our business. You’ll be placed in a team that best matches your skillset and ambitions and be an integral part of the team’s success. 

Examples of previous projects include: 

  • You could be carrying out research and analysis into a particular market area to help support trading decisions  
  • You could be producing a daily news report to highlight market information and important drivers for the trading team. 
  • You could be supporting teams on key projects related to our low carbon ambitions  
  • You could be working to automate and optimise systems to speed up trading processes 

Throughout, you will have on the job training as well as industry-leading learning to develop technical and soft skills.  Alongside this, a graduate buddy will help you network and learn everything you need to perform in the organisation. Following your internship you will be considered as a potential candidate for our 2023 Trading & shipping graduate programme. We have designed our graduate program to enable flexibility, giving you the choice of a development track preference when joining.  Over the course of the 11 week internship programme you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the development tracks through networking, training & information sessions before making a decision on which graduate development track you'd like to apply to. 

Trading & shipping development tracks include

Trading  

Joining our energy trading team, you’ll be part of managing our trades on all the major energy commodity exchanges and the OTC market as well as our daily exposure to global currency and interest rate fluctuations. You’ll have the opportunity to experience different trading disciplines and styles from physical trading to paper trading. Over the course of the 3-year scheme you’ll complete rotations that equip you with the skills and knowledge to become a successful trader at the end of the programme. 

Analytics 

Analysts have the opportunity to directly influence trading decisions as part of a highly commercial and skilled team. Working in the fast-paced environment of our trading floors and with access to vast amounts of data and information, you’ll focus on driving continued growth in trading profits and acting as a subject matter expert on energy market fundamentals. This organization includes specialists working in market analytics, structuring and data science.  

Commercial 

Every year, bp invests billions of dollars searching for new sources of energy, supplying our customers with the fuels they need. 
You’ll help to ensure we make the best use of our investment. We want you to be in the best position to propose new and creative ways to maximize value. There are many commercial teams responsible for building and maintaining key relationships, developing unique solutions to address bp’s and our customer’s business needs and creating additional value for our trading business. Rotations on the commercial graduate track include marketing & origination, trading operations, chartering and strategy. 

Requirements 

To apply for this role, you will need to be in your penultimate year of study (those going onto a Masters and PhD students can apply). We would like to allow those who are penultimate year from starting work to apply so this would include those who are approaching their final year and taking a gap year.
