Are you a marine ecologist at the start of your career? Do you have an interest in marine invertebrate taxonomy or marine ecology, and want to apply your knowledge to monitor and improve the health of ecosystems?
Do you want to build on your knowledge of sample processing and marine surveys, working with samples from all over the Irish coast? AQUAFACT, part of the APEM Group are looking for a Graduate Marine Ecologist to join our team!
About the role
As a Graduate Marine Ecologist, you will work as part of a team offering multi-disciplinary approaches to supporting development and projects in the marine, freshwater and terrestrial environments. Our AQUAFACT team process more than 500 benthic invertebrate samples annually from estuarine, coastal and offshore environments.
You will become familiar with different types of samples, developing your knowledge and skills to be able to identify all the major groups of marine benthic organisms. You will be responsible for sieving, extraction and sorting of marine biota from received samples, alongside basic laboratory tasks and duties, such as cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
In time, this role will give you the chance to then be trained up to become a taxonomist where you will learn to identify animals. Whilst this role is predominantly based in the lab, there will also be some great opportunity to get out into the field and participate in some consultancy work.
You will need to be degree qualified in a relevant discipline such as Marine, Biology or Freshwater, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will be enthusiastic about working in a real lab amongst an expert team of benthic ecologists, with an interest and passion for the environmental sciences.
You will be offered the chance to work on a variety of projects, many of our employees have worked on projects that have been of personal interest to them. We match this with a commitment to continuous development and learning to support your career. We also offer benefits to look after you, from private medical insurance for all employees, access to mental health first aiders and comprehensive income protection if you cannot work.
