Zahra's success story: Securing work experience at Goldman Sachs

    Created on 30 Sep 2024

Zahra is a Computer Science student from the University of Southampton. She secured work experience at Goldman Sachs through Bright Network.

First, we’d love for you to tell us a little about yourself.

“Growing up, I wanted to be a lot of things, from becoming an astronaut to a lawyer. I’ve always loved computers, but it wasn’t until a coding school trip in Year 12, that my entire future plan changed from pursuing a biology degree to a computer science degree.

I was keen to go to university so I could learn the ins and outs of coding, in order to pursue a career in it in the future.”

What was your application process like?

“The application process was pretty easy! Goldman Sachs don't put that much pressure on your when you apply for their opportunities, I just had to submit my CV and cover letter, and then I got invited to do a short interview.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“I looked through the career advice and regularly look at the opportunities offered by employers on Bright Network. The platform has all the information I need to be able to apply to top tier companies.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I’m really proud of overcoming all the challenges I’ve faced, including not always doing very well in my technical interviews.

I’d excel in the first stages of interview and was confident when it came to talking about myself and engaging with the interviewer, but when it came to coding and explaining things on the spot, I found it very overwhelming.

It’s not something I’ve entirely overcome, but I’m working on improving my technical knowledge.”

What are your tips to people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“Just believe in yourself. You won't find a role or get an offer until you actually apply for it, so just do it and don’t hold yourself back!”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I'm currently building up my coding skills in order to apply to summer internships.

Hopefully in 2025 I will be undergoing an internship if I get accepted, and potentially a return offer after I finish the internship.”
