Bright Network member and Economics student, Varun, recently secured a summer internship at HSBC whilst in his final year at UCL. Varun shared with us how he found the whole experience and what advice he has for fellow members.
Why did you choose this firm and this role?:
I chose HSBC because of the people I spoke to. They were very down to earth and I got on well with them. I chose this role as it seemed like a very intellectually challenging profession and I felt this would be something I would enjoy.
What was the toughest part of the application process? And your favourite part?:
The toughest part was preparing for the assessment centre. I realised I didn't have enough knowledge of the division as I thought and it required a lot of preparation work as a result. My favourite part was getting to speak to the people that actually work in that division.
Were you surprised by anything in the process?:
I was surprised at how friendly all the interviewers were. I was expecting a colder, tougher reception but they were all very welcoming.
What three top tips would you give your fellow Bright Network members?
Tip 1: Make sure you know the division in a high level of depth.
Tip 2: Speak to people at the firm if you can.
Tip 3: Know why you want to work at the firm over any other.
What's your lucky charm or pre-interview ritual?
