Tracey is a Chemistry student from the University of Cardiff. She secured an internship as a Construction Management Assistant with Mace at The Oxford Science Park through Bright Network.
First, we’d love for you to tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I’m a huge Francophile and Linguistics in general is something that positively tickles my brain.
In terms of careers, exploring sectors which have a tangible impact to people and the world around is something I favour.
At university, I enjoy attending Christian Union and the African and Caribbean society with friends!”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“Being in first year and not knowing exactly what my career pathway will look like, I wanted to gain experience in any field possible, particularly in ones that I may not have considered before.
Sometimes trying to carve out a direct plan can set limitations and so during the summer, I wanted to gain as much experience as possible.
Mace was promising to me, particularly as an undergraduate without a lot of experience. This meant that I knew I’d be joining a company that would allow me to flourish in learning within a new environment, whilst gaining technical insight not offered as much elsewhere.”
What was the application process like?
“The assessment centre was definitely challenging, however doing practice questions, simulating an assessment centre environment and reading up on tips and advice which helped massively.”
What have you learned from going through the process?
“I’ve learned that it’s important to recognise the good you’ve done, even when it’s easy to be critical over the negative.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I found the opportunity on the Bright Network website.”
“I also attended the Women in TEC event which helped with preparation for interviews and assessment centres.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“Persisting in my studies and finding strength to push myself. I’m proud that I was able to develop myself by participating in various opportunities, even though I didn’t know what I expect during first year.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“Practice speaking out answers to questions even on your own. Watch YouTube videos on interviews and assessment centres and answer the questions in the context of your own interview or assessment centre.”
