Tom's success story: Securing a Tax Graduate role at PwC

Tom is an Economics and Finance graduate from the University of Bristol. He secured a Tax Graduate role at PwC in London, through Bright Network. 

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.  

“When I was younger I didn’t think I’d end up in this role. I always knew that I wanted to go to university and through my enjoyment of the finance section of my course, I was able to tailor my applications to roles which I knew I would enjoy.”  

What motivated you to apply for your role?  

“I was attracted to the position as I’d previously worked in tax the year prior during work experience. I really enjoyed it, so applied to lots of tax roles, hoping I’d secure one as a graduate.”  

What was the application process like?  

“Through using Bright Network, the application process was more simple than it otherwise would have been. 

I was able to easily find jobs that I wanted to apply to. The hardest part of the process was the assessment centre where my time management skills were tested.”  

What are you most proud of about your journey?  

“I’m most proud of my contribution to PwC during my internship. I was able to help my team with certain projects, providing valuable help and delivering information to the clients.”  

What have you learnt from going through the process?  

“The job application process taught me the importance of thorough preparation and adaptability.  

I was surprised by how detailed and specific the interviews were, but it reinforced the value of showcasing relevant skills with clear examples. 

The assessment centre was by far the hardest part of the process.”  

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?  

“If I could do anything differently, I would have applied to a greater variety of roles as often it is a numbers game.  

The best advice I received was to prepare. Failure to prepare means preparing to fail. It was particularly useful to read the latest news articles about the firm and key events which relate to the role in which I was applying for.”

“I am looking forward to starting my graduate role and progressing in my career in tax.”
