Tim's success story: Securing a Policy Graduate role at Ofcom

Created on 25 Oct 2024

Tim is a Philosophy, Politics and Economics graduate from the University of Oxford. He secured a Policy Graduate role at Ofcom in London through Bright Network.

First, we’d love for you to tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I grew up in Bath in the Southwest of England.

I've long been interested in Politics, ever since I was given a radio for my birthday aged 13, and I would listen to Radio 4 every day. This led me to decide to go to Oxford University.”

What motivated you to apply for the role?

“I’ve long been interested in how politics is put into place in reality and how government policy interacts with the real world.

Ofcom and specifically the policy role, offers the perfect way to see this in practice.”

What was your application journey like?

“My application was long, but straightforward. There were long gaps between different phases, but generally I quite enjoyed it, especially the assessment centre, which I found to be particularly intellectually stimulating.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“Bright Network was great at regularly phoning me to check on how my application progress was doing and they also made sure to answer any questions I had.”

What have you learned from going through the process?

“I learned that when you enjoy an admissions process, it is a good sign that you are applying for the right sort of job for you.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“For anyone wanting to follow in my footsteps, my advice would be to be very diligent in the run-up to the application. There are many phases to the process, so there are unfortunately lots of opportunity to fall short.

It’s important therefore to be able to demonstrate consistent excellence in everything from teamwork, skills and your CV. I would also advise enjoying the process and you’ll do better if you enjoy it too!”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I am really looking forward to seeing where Ofcom takes me. It's so diverse, regulating everything from the post to social media. The rotational nature of the scheme will allow me to experience so much of it!
