First, we’d love for you to tell us a little about yourself.
“I am driven by results and passionate about numbers. As an accounting and finance student, I was motivated to go to university to understand the complexities of financial systems and gain the skills needed for a successful career in finance.
I chose this path because finance offers exciting challenges and strategic opportunities, playing a crucial role in every organisation. It's a dynamic field with endless possibilities, allowing you to find a career that truly fits your interests and strengths.”
What motivated you to apply for the role?
“What particularly draws me to Legal & General is its purpose of "improving lives, building a better society, and creating value." This mission resonates with my personal values and inspires me to contribute to meaningful work. Additionally, their ambition and commitment to invest in growing the business demonstrates a forward-thinking and dynamic environment, which is crucial for my professional growth.
The internal structure at Legal & General allows me to gain experience in areas outside my specific role, providing a holistic understanding of the business. This is valuable as it broadens my skill set and enhances my adaptability, preparing me for a diverse range of challenges in my future career.”
What was the application journey like?
“The application process was quite challenging, but I managed to navigate it successfully by leveraging my resources. I reached out to Legal & General with any questions or concerns I had and consulted my wider network, who had undergone similar experiences.
One of the key challenges was the presentation, especially since the subject matter was broad and required thorough preparation. Despite these challenges, I was able to secure an offer, which was a testament to my persistence and the support I received.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I came across this internship programme through Bright Network. It immediately caught my attention due to Legal & General’s strong reputation and commitment to social responsibility.
I also previously attended Bright Network’s Black Talent in Banking event.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“Start early and research thoroughly. Begin your search and application process well in advance and research companies of interest and understand their timelines. Early preparation gives you a better chance to create strong applications.
Leverage your network. Connect with your network for guidance and support and reach out to peers, alumni, or professionals in your field for insights.
Be persistent and stay positive. The process can be tough and competitive, but persistence is key. Apply to multiple opportunities and learn from each experience, and although it may be tricky, try to stay positive and don't get discouraged by rejections.”
