N is a Systems Engineering graduate from the University of Warwick. She secured a graduate job as a Data, Digitial and Cyber Graduate Engineer at Jacobs, through Bright Network.
First, we’d love for you to tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I chose engineering because of the hands-on work and problem-solving nature of the field. At school, I loved mathematics and physics and began to realise the potential of engineering to help people's lives on a large scale.
University helped me gain the right skills and knowledge to be able to understand more about the field as well as reassure me that this sector was the right choice for me. I hope to be a part of creating solutions for the future generations and explore the world of technology which as always captured my imagination.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
"Jacobs is a large engineering company that works for many sectors including energy, national security and infrastructure, which makes it the ideal place for me to experience working on a range of projects to expand my skillset.
The data, digital and cyber space encompasses all the areas I’ve focused on in my degree and allows me to understand different roles in technology before finding my path.”
What was the application process like?
“Bright Network made it very easy to browse through different roles at companies rather than the lengthy process of Googling companies.
The application process across companies is standard, but time consuming, as many applications ask similar things so it can become tedious completing each application.
As for interviews and assessment centres, there’s lots of resources and guidance out there on how best to prepare. I was most nervous about the video interviews since I’ve done one before and the whole idea of them was very daunting at first, but I become more confident after completing them.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I utilised the searching platform as well as attending Internship Experience UK, which exposed me to the world of work in Engineering.”
What have you learned from going through the process and what are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“Start early and apply to spring weeks and internships every year. Even if you don’t get the jobs you’re applying to, it’s amazing practice for when applying in your final year for graduate roles.
I found using company cheat sheets with their values and key information was key to preparing.
I’d also recommend using Bright Network to browse roles and set deadline trackers.”
Tell us about the future. What’s next?
“I’m looking forward to starting my new role and my first job. I am excited to get involved in new innovative projects that will come to life as opposed to in university. I look forward to learning new skills and developing the expertise to hopefully make an impact one day.”
