Molly is a Psychology graduate from Durham University. She secured a Digital Innovation Graduate role at HSBC in Sheffield, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little about yourself.
“I knew I wanted to go to university and decided on Psychology because I found the subject really interesting in school. However, whilst doing my degree, I realised I couldn’t see myself pursuing a career in Psychology and decided to look at other options. I chose a career in tech after working part-time in a software testing role in my final year.”
What motivated you to apply for the role?
“I was particularly attracted to the graduate scheme at HSBC because it is such a large, international organisation that offers you the opportunity to work with people from all around the world.”
What was the application process like?
“I sent off an initial application with my CV and then completed an online assessment. After that, I got invited to the assessment centre.
Although the process was very thorough, I heard back soon after completing each stage and received detailed feedback from both the online assessment and the assessment centre.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I found Bright Network's CV and interview resources incredibly helpful during the application process.”
What have you learned from going through the application process?
“I’ve learnt to have confidence in my skills and abilities and to showcase them in applications and interviews.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“In terms of practical advice, I’d recommend thoroughly preparing for each stage of the application process. Take some time to practice online assessments and psychometric tests and prepare for interviews by researching the company and considering what skills you have that make you a great fit for the role.
Additionally, I think it’s important to have self-assurance and resilience during application season. Don’t be discouraged from applying for a role because you don’t have the ‘traditional’ background.
Equally, don’t let job rejections demotivate you – everyone will get a rejection at some point, you just have to keep going and move on to the next application.”
Tell us about the future. What’s next?
“I’m looking forward to continuing my learning and development whilst getting involved in the wide range of opportunities at HSBC.”
