We recently got the opportunity to catch up with Maciko about how they secured a training contract with Clyde & Co, how they build commercial awareness before the interview and their top tips for Bright Network members looking to follow in their footsteps.
What stood out to you about Clyde & Co?
What first stood out to me about Clyde & Co is that they are experts in insurance. I had previously done some experience in an insurance firm at university, and this started my interest in the area. When I was researching roles and firms, Clyde & Co stood out as a leader in the industry. With further research, I also saw how Clyde & Co championed diversity. Being an international student, that is something really important to me. Finally, networking with some employees at Clyde & Co also showed me I could be myself within the firm, and that was very comforting to know.
How did you build your commercial awareness before the interview?
I think the first thing that helped me was listening to podcasts. The ‘Financial Daily’ and Bright Network’s ‘Thinking Commercially’ really helped me learn about current events going on in the working world. They were also convenient to listen to on the way to university or making a coffee. So easy to fit it into my schedule. I also recommend talking to your friends more about these topics. I’d regularly meet with a friend, and we’d organise the time to discuss something from the news. It was very useful, as we both grew our understanding of the topic and got used to talking about it in detail.
What top tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?
- Be consistent and organised. A lot of people can be juggling applications, university, and a job. So being organised and consistent with applying really helps. Make an Excel sheet.
- Do research. Whether it be through websites, networking with people or attending events. Putting yourself in the place to be able to ask questions to employers and gain that direct insight.
