Lemar's success story: Securing a Technology Industrial Placement at Deloitte

    Created on 7 Feb 2025

Lemar is a Computer Science student from the University of Liverpool. He secured a Technology Industrial Placement at Deloitte in London, through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“My journey into technology wasn't a straight path, but it reflects my ability to adapt and grow. Growing up, I was passionate about basketball and initially dreamed of becoming a professional player. This taught me valuable lessons about dedication and perseverance.

As I matured, I discovered a growing fascination with technology and its potential to create impact. The decision to pursue university, particularly computer science, came from realising I wanted to be part of shaping the future through technology. While taking a longer route through BTECs and a foundation year, this path gave me a unique perspective and strengthened my determination.

It showed me that success isn't always about following the traditional route but about finding your own way forward. I'm drawn to the technology sector because it combines creative problem-solving with tangible impact. The constant evolution of technology means there's always something new to learn, which appeals to my natural curiosity.

What excites me most is how technology can transform businesses and improve people's lives. This drive to make a meaningful impact while continuously learning and growing is what motivates me in my career path.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“I was drawn to Deloitte Digital because of its unique position at the intersection of technology and business transformation. What particularly excites me about this role is the opportunity to work with modern technologies while gaining exposure to how digital solutions drive real business impact.

Working in London's financial district, combined with Deloitte's approach of blending technical expertise with consulting skills, aligns perfectly with my aspirations to understand both the technical and business aspects of technology implementation. The company's reputation for providing structured training while maintaining a modern, relaxed culture in their Digital practice, along with the opportunity to work alongside graduate hires on diverse projects, makes this role particularly compelling to me.”

What was the application process like?

“There were several assessments, such as video recordings, job simulations, numerical reasoning and critical reasoning tests. They were all challenging in their own regard and quite time consuming, as they had to be done in one sitting.

I was most nervous about the final stage interview, as it was an in-person interview at their London office, but what really helped calm my nerves was that Deloitte had placement and graduate students on site who answered questions and chatted with us, which helped me to forget my nerves.

At each stage of the process Deloitte provided feedback based on performance, which helped me to understand my strengths, whilst seeing areas I could improve in.”

What have you learned from going through the process?

“Preparing for face-to-face interviews really helped me understand the importance of structured answers and the use of past examples to strengthen my responses. It also ultimately helped me learn that I shouldn't limit myself."

"Coming from my background, making it to London was something I didn't think was possible, but the interview process showed me that what matters most is your capabilities and potential, not where you come from."

"The experience taught me to be more confident in my abilities and helped me realise that diversity of perspective is actually valuable in a professional environment. The whole process challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and showed me that I'm capable of more than I initially believed.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“My advice would be that when you’re doing assessments, do them in a quiet area so you can really focus.

If you do make it to the final stage interview, have structured answers to behavioural questions and make sure you really understand the company and everything they’re working on. Commerical awareness is key!”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I'm genuinely excited about diving deep into the tech world and seeing where I can make my mark. Beyond just coding, I want to understand how technology can actually change how businesses work and maybe even find ways to innovate that nobody's thought of yet.

I'm looking forward to challenging myself, learning from real-world projects, and growing both my technical skills and business understanding. While I can't predict exactly where this journey will take me, I know I want to be at the forefront of technology and business transformation, pushing boundaries and continuing to learn.

My background has taught me that with determination and the right opportunities, you can exceed your own expectations - and that's exactly what I plan to do.”
