We recently caught up with Joy about how they secured a Marketing Industrial Placement with Unilever, making an application stand out and their top tips for Bright Network members looking to follow in their footsteps.
What stood out to you about Unilever?
Personally, I knew I wanted to gain a work placement in a multinational corporation, so I applied for these types of companies, including Unilever. I also signed up to their career page during my 1st year of university so that when they opened the applications I was informed straight away.
I admired their stride for sustainability, especially as an FMCG company and the push for more conscious purchasing, and I wanted to develop my marketing skills in a large company that will enable me to learn skills from a variety of creative, global people.
How did you make your application stand out?
To begin with, Unilever’s process itself was quite unique and unlike other companies, which took me by surprise. However, through this method, I was able to show my passion and knowledge of the brands and envision myself as an actual placement student working at Unilever.
At first, I was a bit sceptical to show my personality, but then I realised that for me to be able to work in a company which shares similar values to me, I would need to show who I am from a positive perspective. So, I think what made my application stand out was the ideas I included, the values I shared with them and how ‘personalised’ my application was.
What part of the application process did you find the most challenging?
I think all parts of the applications were challenging in the sense that you never feel any reassurance that you will get the role until the last stage, and even then, you still feel tense.
But for me it was definitely the assessment centre, as being a natural introvert, I felt pressured to speak and get my voice heard amidst other participants, but I found it challenging, especially as you need to keep your energy high throughout the assessment day.
Did you get any feedback in the past that helped you with your application?
Yes, feedback from past work experiences and even previous failed applications such as being more confident in my skills, thinking outside the box and time management.
For every experience I completed, I made sure to request and keep the feedback I received, and I used them to curate my placement applications.
What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?
- Start applying early, especially for big companies!
- Be a confident version of yourself and show your enthusiasm and curiosity.
- Stay motivated and keep applying to the ones you are genuinely interested in; your passion will show naturally.
