Joshvin's success story: Securing a graduate role at Sky

    Created on 7 Feb 2025

Joshvin is an Economics student from UCL. He secured a place on the Finance Graduate Programme at Sky in London, through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“As a child, I wanted to be an engineer because I loved the idea of building and creating things from scratch. Over time, my interests shifted toward understanding how systems work‚ whether in a physical world or in economic frameworks, which led me to pursue a degree in Economics. That early fascination with solving problems has stayed with me and now drives my passion for analysing data and designing solutions in the finance sector.

My career path reflects my analytical mindset, curiosity, and passion for solving complex problems. From studying Economics at UCL to gaining hands-on experience through roles in finance and data analysis, I've always gravitated toward opportunities that challenge me to think critically and make data-driven decisions. My leadership roles in extracurricular activities, like captaining Bhangra teams, further showcase my ability to collaborate and thrive in dynamic environments.”

What motivated you to apply for the role?

"I was motivated to apply for the Sky Finance Graduate Scheme because of its unique combination of structured development and real-world impact. Sky’s reputation as an innovative, customer-focused company aligns perfectly with my passion for working in dynamic and forward-thinking environments.

The opportunity to gain broad exposure across different business areas‚ such as technology, content, and strategy‚ while working toward the globally recognized CIMA qualification is incredibly appealing.

What particularly stood out to me about Sky is its emphasis on fostering talent and innovation. Sky’s commitment to sustainability and delivering exceptional customer experiences reflects values I admire and aspire to contribute to. This role offers the perfect blend of technical learning, professional growth and opportunities to make meaningful contributions within a supportive and inspiring company."

What was the application journey like?

"My application journey for the Sky Finance Graduate Scheme has been both exciting and challenging. To prepare, I started by thoroughly researching Sky as a company‚ it’s values, culture and recent innovations, so I could align my responses to what makes Sky unique. I also reviewed the CIMA qualification structure and familiarized myself with the skills and experiences the role requires, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork.

I practiced psychometric tests and situational judgment exercises to prepare for the assessment stages, and I reflected on my experiences to craft compelling examples for potential competency-based questions. Additionally, I engaged with current graduates through online forums to gain insights into their experiences, which gave me a clearer picture of what to expect.

The part I was most nervous about was the assessment centre, specifically the interview, as I wanted to ensure my personality and enthusiasm came across clearly. To overcome this, I practiced answering questions concisely and confidently while maintaining a natural and personable tone. Overall, the journey has been a valuable opportunity to reflect on my skills and aspirations while showcasing my suitability for this exciting role."

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“Bright Network made me aware of this opportunity and gave me access to great stories from individuals working within the company which assisted me in the application process and assessment centre.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I’m most proud of the resilience and determination I had to overcome the many setbacks I faced during the application season, especially when facing rejection emails.”

What have you learned from going through the process?

“Going through the application process, I’ve learned the importance of preparation, adaptability and showcasing your authentic self. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging and well-structured the process was, with each stage designed to assess not just technical skills but also cultural fit and potential for growth.

It was slightly longer than I anticipated, but each step felt purposeful. One thing I wish I’d known beforehand was how much the process would encourage creativity and individuality.

This helped me feel more confident in sharing my unique experiences and perspectives. It’s been a rewarding journey that has allowed me to grow and reflect on my strengths.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“The best tip I could give is to prepare adequately for the application process. Whether it’s tailoring your CV to each role you’re applying to, or are practicing psychometric tests online, preparation can make the entire application process a lot easier and comfortable.

I’d also suggest that you be yourself in interviews and assessment centres. I found that I was most successful when I wasn’t going off a script and I just spoke as myself.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m excited to start my career at Sky, gaining hands-on experience across diverse business areas while working toward the CIMA qualification.

I’m particularly looking forward to contributing to impactful projects, collaborating with talented teams, and applying my analytical skills to solve real-world challenges.

I hope to develop my strategic thinking, leadership abilities, and industry expertise, setting a strong foundation for a successful career in finance.”
