Ingrid's success story: Securing a Project Management internship at Amazon

Created on 8 Jan 2025

Ingrid is a Psychology student from Durham University. She secured a Project Management Internship at Amazon in London through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I chose to study Psychology because I was really interested in understanding our thinking process and motivations for our behaviour.

However, as I continued studying Psychology, I wanted to pivot into project or product management to apply my logical and critical reasoning skills as well as my expertise in being human orientated to holistically improve a product or service for the end user.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“I applied for Amazon, because I really admire how closely Amazon carries out their leadership principle when doing business sustainably, particularly with the principle customer obsession.

I wanted to apply to project management specifically because I really enjoy the accountability and responsibility of leading a project end-to-end and getting to apply my strengths in adaptability to demonstrate strong results.

I also enjoy the challenge of being super immersed in a project and understanding the data and technical aspects to see a project to fruition.”

What was the application process like?

“It wasn't too bad when compared to the application process for graduate schemes and the process was relatively fast.

Amazon responded in a timely manner which I really liked. I was able to prepare by really making sure I understood their leadership values and the requirements of the role. I also made sure to review my previous experience, catering it to what they were looking for in an ideal candidate.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“I received an invitation from a member of the Bright Network team to attend the Amazon Campus Summer Series which focused on non-tech roles at Amazon.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I was most proud when completing the video interview stage. It included pre-recorded video questions, maths assessments, and an excel test which I was especially proud to pass.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“I’d recommend really trying to understand why you’d want to apply to the company and role you’re applying to and make sure you provide evidence and case studies that support that in your application.

For Amazon specifically, make sure to research Amazon’s leadership principles too!”

What have you learned from going through the process?

“During the application process, I learnt more about project management and it allowed me to confirm what I want my ideal career path to be. The length of the application process was actually faster than I expected – I received my offer the same day as my final interview!

I felt that having attended a Bright Network event beforehand and knowing my application would be fast-tracked because of my attendance really helped boost my confidence and apply for something outside my comfort zone.

My advice would be to just apply and see how far you get and don’t let a potential rejection stop you from trying.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m looking forward to starting my internship and hopefully getting a return offer. I’m excited to further develop my hard and soft skills at such a large scale.

I’m hoping to further develop my excel skills and have more practical expereience in project management.”
