    Created on 20 Mar 2025

Ellie is a Biomedical Engineering with Management graduate from the University of Liverpool. She secured a Graduate Trainee in Investment Management at Rathbones Group Plc in Edinburgh, through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I recently graduated from the University of Liverpool with a Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering with Management.

I’m so excited to start my dream job, in a beautiful new city. This sector provides a great opportunity for me to apply the skillset I’ve developed throughout my degree in a challenging and ever-changing environment.”

What motivated you to apply for the role?

“I wasn’t just attracted to the position, but the company itself too. The company I’m joining has such a wonderful working culture that really supports its staff in personal and professional development, which has been increasing apparent throughout the recruitment process.

The position itself appealed to me as the role provides the opportunity to be intellectually stimulated and challenged on a daily basis, whilst retaining a client facing aspect, which I aspire to have in my future career.”

What was the application process like?

“The application process was of course challenging. Despite it being tricky at times, the company did fantastically in providing support and regular communication throughout the process which really made it an actually enjoyable experience.”

How did Bright Network help you secure your role?

“Bright Network provided a great platform to help explore the roles available, highlighting those that would suit my skill set and background.

It helped me find the Rathbones position and I’m so excited to start!”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I’m most proud that I was able to overcome any apprehensions I had about my own capabilities and achieve the tasks I put my mind to.

I think it’s very easy to doubt yourself, but I’m proud that I remained confident in my abilities and was able to demonstrate that to the company, ultimately leading me to securing my dream role.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“If I had to give advice to someone in my shoes six months or so ago, I would repeat what my grandparents actually said to me and that is to be confident in yourself, as you can achieve more than you think as long as you set your mind to it.

I know it's easy to say this when you are on the other end of the path, but it really is true.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I’m looking forward to throwing myself headfirst into my new role, learning new skills and embracing new challenges. I am also excited to be moving to a new city and know that it will be a great personal learning experience too.”
