We recently caught up with Caitlin about how they secured a role with Gowling WLG, their top tips for the application process and how Bright Network helped them secure the role.
What stood out to you about Gowling WLG?
Gowling WLG is a progressive law firm and that’s really important to me. They really value the person and took an interest in me and my hobbies. That was really nice and drew me to want to join the firm.
How did you build your commercial awareness before the interview?
I attended webinars on sectors I was interested in, and then explored them further. Reading articles on sites such as the Economist I found really helpful to build my knowledge and understanding. Also, webinars with industry experts were also really useful in providing the key insights I needed.
What would be your top tip to members going through the application process?
My top tip would be to accept that rejections are likely, but don’t let it get you down and look to learn from those experiences. Rejections are very useful to help you grow and understand how you can improve for that next application.
How did Bright Network help you secure this role?
I took part in Bright Network’s Internship Experience UK. It was really insightful and great to pick up application tips and some commercial awareness advice. I also kept an eye out for events Bright Network were holding, as some really helped me develop my interest and knowledge of certain sectors.
What’s your advice for tackling tough interview questions?
Firstly, I’d say stay calm. It can be a nerve-wracking situation, but an interviewer is just a person as well, and you’re just going to have a conversation. Keep in mind to talk about yourself with some prepared examples. It really helps a lot to have an idea of where you want to go with an answer, and it puts you more at ease to know you have them ready.
What top three tips would you give Bright Network members looking to follow in your footsteps?
- Have a strategy for the firms you’re applying to.
- Keep track of deadlines, as it can be easy for them to creep up on you.
- Don’t hide your personality. Firms want to get to know you and understand what makes you great.
