Beatriz's success story: Securing a Graduate Automation Engineer role at HSBC

Created on 8 Oct 2024

Beatriz is a Economics and Politics graduate from the University of Warwick. She secured a Graduate Automation Engineer role with HSBC through Bright Network.

First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.

“I’ve always wanted to work in a role where I’d have global impact. When I was younger, I wanted to work for the UN, which is partly why I studied Economics and Politics at university.

I’ve ended up in technology rather than government, but I love that I still have a global focus and that I get to work in a team that operates within four countries.”

What motivated you to apply for your role?

“I was motivated to apply for the role because I liked the idea of working at a global bank and I wanted the flexibility of working internationally, whilst also getting the opportunity to develop my skills.”

What are you most proud of about your journey?

“I came from a non-technical, non-STEM degree and I found it very hard to find Technology Graduates Schemes that were open to candidates that didn’t come from that background.

I was keen to get involved in the tech space and had done lots of self-learning, so I felt confident that I could handle the technical side if I was given the chance and getting a place on the HSBC Technology Graduate Scheme and now being in an Engineering role has really confirmed this.”

What was the application process like?

“It was challenging, but because the hiring process was skills based it was different to other interviews. I didn't feel like there were any trick questions and the interviewers were very genuine in getting you to talk about your experiences.”

What have you learned from going through the process?

“Practice makes perfect and no one is perfect to begin with so sometimes the failures are what helps you succeed in your next endeavour.”

What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?

“I wish I’d been more selective with the roles I applied for. It’s tempting to apply for lots of Graduate Schemes out of a fear of not finding a role, but I always found I was most successful when I applied for roles that genuinely matched my interests and passions.”

Tell us about the future. What’s next?

“I look forward to working abroad at some point in my career. I also can’t wait to carry on developing my Software Engineering skills throughout my career.”
