Working at Thales OME Glasgow site, you will engage primarily with software, firmware and algorithm engineers to investigate porting existing convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier code that run on desktop PCs to Xilinx System On Chips, and investigating the performance whilst running on target.

This opportunity would suit a student from an Engineering or Computing discipline, and in particular, we are looking for students who have an interest in working with real-time embedded software.

You will be in a hands-on software development role with experienced engineers providing mentoring and support.

About you

  • A demonstrable desire to work in embedded software, particularly, embedded linux
  • Enjoy designing, developing and testing software solutions and components
  • Has some knowledge of programming languages and frameworks (C, C++) and some VHDL knowledge. Knowledge of APIs such as PyTorch would be a bonus, but not essential
  • Have a basic understanding of embedded systems/hardware
  • Organised and able to communicate clearly

Roles & responsibilities

You will

  • Further develop your programming skills in C/C++, as well as High Level Synthesis tools for generating VHDL.
  • Investigate potenital areas which may improve execution times of the CNN detection built with HDL and hand crafted C code, typically on a Xilinx SoC platform:
    • Use of acceleration within the Processor Subsystem
    • Optimisation settings for HLS code generation
    • Using chipscope and tools such as Lttng to profile the Software / Firmware interactions
  • Further develop an appreciation of hardware platforms

What we can offer

Whilst this is an intern placement, it could potentially lead to full-time employment.

There is ample opportunity to develop your skills within Thales, developing as an engineer, further progressing to senior technical roles (e.g. Software Architect or Technical Specialist) or project managerial roles (Software Engineering Manager).

Training is provided through a mixture of mentoring, online and in-person courses. Thales actively encourages membership of professional organisations such as the IET, and will pay membership fees and support individuals to work towards Chartered status.

Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires you to be a UK National and achieve Security Clearance (SC) without any caveats. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. If approved by the MOD, a dual national from a Non-ITAR country may be considered. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance. To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
