The Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre (HBIC) is part of an integrated, multi-disciplinary team offering a range of specialist environmental services to the County Council and other public authorities. HBIC brings together information on Hampshire’s natural environment and works with a wide range of partner organisations involved in the supply and use of biodiversity data.

    The role

    We are looking for a highly motivated and organised individual who has a keen eye for detail to to support the management of the HBIC Habitat Survey Programme and the evaluation of Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation, in addition to the verification and provision of biodiversity data.

    Applicants should have an appropriate degree or professional qualification; a good understanding of ecology, habitats, species and nature conservation practice; knowledge and experience of habitat survey and vegetation classification systems; and good IT skills preferably including experience in biodiversity data handling, GIS and Access databases.

    About you

    Essential Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

    • An appropriate environmental degree or professional qualification.
    • Some previous post graduate relevant experience.
    • Good understanding of ecology, habitats and species, and of nature conservation practice.
    • Good understanding of the principles and application of planning policies and environmental legislation.
    • Relevant experience including: Habitat survey methodologies/ classification systems, Designated sites legislation/policy guidance, Management of biodiversity data and application of data to user needs including those of local government, statutory agencies, and the voluntary sector
    • Ability to use computer-based information systems including Access data bases and GIS.
    • Communication skills with a high standard of written and oral presentation.
    • Ability to manage own workload and also contribute effectively to the team.
    • Ability to be able to communicate in a clear manner and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external clients and partners.

    Desirable Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

    • Eligibility for full membership of CIEEM.
    • Working knowledge of the Recorder database and ArcMap GIS.
    • Working knowledge of the Integrated UK Habitat classification system.
    • Project management skills.
