The role
Your role as a Pharmaceutical Materials Scientist will be a technical lab-based role, which will give you valuable hands-on experience working on a wide range of techniques and measurement systems to characterise the physical properties of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), excipients and drug products and / or finished products. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of analytical scientists, material scientists, dosage form and particle sciences experts.
Key roles and responsibilities will include:
- Supporting and leading business critical projects to assist the global GSK network such as comparing materials as part of major material change programs for different manufacturing sites and conducting Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations for manufacturing and quality issues.
- Providing measurement of data, including interpretation, reporting, and discussing results with customers from other GSK sites around the world for numerous projects related to different dosage forms across specialty and established products e.g., API powders, excipients, blends, granules, suspensions, tablets etc.
- Gaining competency on a wide variety of physical property testing equipment and techniques supporting small and large molecule products, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Particle Size Distribution (PSD), X-ray Particle Diffraction (XRPD), Micro-flow imaging (MFI) etc.
- Responsible for calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment such as balances, safety cabinets, Tapped Bulk Density (TBD) etc. ensuring quality and safety in all that we do.
- Support of key safety metrics, departmental audits, and continuous improvement projects.

You will work with and learn from an experienced team of multi-disciplined scientists. They will coach and mentor you during your year to help you achieve your potential.
Ware
Ware is the largest GSK site in the UK with a thriving early talent community. The Ware Global Supply Chain site manufactures and supplies oral solid dose tablets (for HIV and oncology) and respiratory devices (for asthma and COPD) to over 140 countries, as well as to patients participating in clinical trials, playing a key role in new product introduction. The Ware site is located less than a mile from the station, with regular rail links through to London Liverpool Street, taking around 45 minutes.
Materials Science is a central technical team within MSAT (Manufacturing Science and Technology) based at the Ware site which supports business critical projects for the Ware site as well as other key sites around the globe.
In this role you will work in the Materials Science lab and gain competency on a wide variety of analytical testing equipment and techniques. This will allow for a broader understanding of the physical properties that are investigated such as solid-state form, the moisture sorption of a material, powder flow, the particle size of powders and several image analysis techniques.
