The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive records of academic and/or professional achievement to join our Systems team for a 12-month industry placement in our London office as systems administrators.
This role offers the opportunity to work in an inclusive, collaborative, and engaging working environment. Eligibility for this position is subject to the D. E. Shaw group’s review of any terms or conditions required by the applicant’s school relating to industry placement. This program is expected to run from June 2025 to June 2026.
What you’ll do day-to-day
In your placement year, you’ll be responsible for a variety of project and support work across a wide range of technology, including Windows PCs and servers, UNIX servers, mobile devices, cutting-edge storage and clustered computing solutions, and several communications platforms.
Your support and project work may include troubleshooting complex technical issues, administering various infrastructure-level systems, and implementing automation and efficiency improvements. You’ll also work closely with other engineering teams to support and deploy on-premise and cloud services.
Who we’re looking for
- We seek students in their penultimate year of study who are eligible for an industry placement as part of their degree.
- Applicants should have basic knowledge of the on-premise and cloud Microsoft enterprise environments and a demonstrated interest in improving processes and technology (e.g., through their past internship experience, on-campus employment at a university helpdesk, personal projects, and/or academic achievements).
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project management skills are critical, as the role involves working with global colleagues across various backgrounds, experiences, and projects.
- Candidates should excel at combining critical analysis and research to solve unfamiliar problems.
- Familiarity or experience with general systems administration, Linux environments, and Python, PowerShell, and/or other scripting languages is a plus.
- In keeping with our firm’s culture and the ever-changing nature of our work, we’re more interested in talent, curiosity, and motivation than we are in any particular skill or experience.
