Event summary: First Year Lawyers Top 100 2018

Book open Reading time: 3 mins

On Wednesday 12th September, we welcomed 119 of the most engaged first year lawyers on the network to kick-start their career in law by meeting directly with representatives from eight of the world’s leading Law firms. At this exclusive event, our talented members gained unique insights, received invaluable advice and got all their questions answered.

The day started off with some warm up networking. An enjoyable time where the students got to know each other and build their network with fellow members. This was followed by a session with two of our Bright Network alumni, Hilaire Wong and Josias Senu. They told their stories on how they secured Trainee Solicitor contracts and vacation scheme opportunities and how to make an applications stand out.

Next up was the first panel session of the day. This panel featured representatives from Addleshaw Goddard, Clyde & Co, Macfarlanes, Norton Rose Fulbright and Osborne Clarke to discuss the subject of ‘What to Expect from a Career in Commercial Law.’ The members had the possibility to ask all their questions and gain all the insights that they need to flourish in every step of the application process.

This exciting panel was followed with what many members said was the highlight of the day: the structured networking. This was a chance for our members to do two hours of networking and build relationships with the 8 firms we partnered up with including, Addleshaw Goddard, Clyde & Co, Dentons, Macfarlanes, Norton Rose Fulbright, Osborne Clarke, Reed Smith and Slaughter and May.

“It’s been an amazing day. Before I got here I didn’t really have a good sense on how to differentiate all the firms out there. But after I got to meet representatives from all the firms in person I’ve gained a much better understanding of what firms will be most suitable for me.” - Daniel from University of Sheffield

The structured networking was followed by the last panel session of the day, on the topic of “How to Build a Career while at University.” Here the members met with Partners and Trainees who gave them top tips and advice on how to boost their careers during university.

Here is only one of the amazing tips that was given from Cathy Connolly, Partner at Slaughter and May:

“At some point of the interview you will be tested on your commercial awareness and your ability to debate. Read up on the latest business updates and in addition, grab a few friends and have a training debate. Make sure you feel confident in your arguments of what you think is right and wrong - because that’s basically what Lawyers do, and you will be tested on it”

The day was a truly success and we finished off celebrating Bright Network members who had already achieved excellence in different areas during an Award Ceremony. These students were recognised for their achievements by some of the world’s leading law firms and we can’t wait to see what the future has to bring for them.
