Unilever's application process and top tips

Not only do we want to get to know the real you, but you also need to decide if we are the right for you! In order to do this, we have created an application process which will allow you to understand more about us and how we work as a business and for us to see if you are the right fit for our business.

To help you make the most out of your application process we have complied a list of top tips from both our Future Careers team who have created the process and our Future Careers population who have experienced the process first had! Have a read and see what they recommend you do before you begin your application.

1. What do our recruiters look out for?

We want to hear why you’ve chosen to apply to Unilever. Share with us your values and strengths and tell us how they align with Unilever’s goals and the function you’ve chosen. We can’t wait to learn more about you.

2. What does it take to be successful at Unilever?

You are there to make an impact from day one in your role. Remember to take opportunities, bring suggestions and put your hand up for anything that may come your way. You are in control of your own career path, bring your best self and be willing to learn!

3. Common Interview Questions

The most common interview questions are competency based which often follow "tell me about a time when..." To prepare for your interview we recommend looking at our core behaviours and preparing examples aligned to these. Practice, practice, practice, the common interview technique is the 'STAR' method, which is situation, task, action, result, so practice structuring your answers in this way and focusing on what it was that you did to drive the impact and where possible quantify this.

4. Interview Top tips

Be yourself! We want to get to know about you and what drives you. Make sure you have done your research and are up to speed with what is happening at Unilever. We recommend that you look at our products whether that is in store, online or a recent campaign, and come prepared with your view. You will join us for an assessment day whether that be in person or virtually, remember it is not designed to trip you up but for us both to assess if the opportunity right for you. Remember to read all the information given to you carefully. And most importantly, enjoy the process!

1. Be yourself throughout the application process and embrace your creativity during things like the digital interview and assessment centres!
2. Research Unilever and have a good understanding of their brands, our campaigns and any other relevant information such as our annual report!
3. Inform yourself of Unilever’s products and make sure you are informed about the function you are applying too!
4. Make sure that Unilever’s values resonate with your own and be sure to relate these values to your real-life experiences!
5. Make sure you allocate enough time for each task or interview, as you don’t want to rush anything!
6. It’s challenging! Be aware that you will have to put in a lot of hours, but it will be worth it.
7. Be thorough and read through the website and different aspects of the business!
8. Try and enjoy it and have fun! You can only be yourself and if you immerse yourself in the experience, you will give your best answers.
9. Make sure to have some questions that you are interested in learning about – this shows that you have taken the time to do research and demonstrates to the interviewer your keenness on working for Unilever!
10. Understand Unilever’s initiatives and values as a business when applying and showcase your knowledge of this! This will help you stand out from other applicants.
11. During your assessment, be sure to ask all the right questions! This will help guide you as you discuss your ideas amongst your peers.
