Ziya Jaffrey

Graduate Intern for Pipeline Programmes at WBD

This experience has been invaluable to me due to my own personal interest in new and emerging talent, and my ambition to drive change and growth in representation in the entertainment industry.

I find the most fulfilling aspect of my role to be the focus on engaging underrepresented talent, and the unwavering dedication my team shows in their attitudes towards our programmes. The work we do is community focused, meaning that we are able to witness tangible change and impact on the talent we work with. Our efforts to embrace and encourage inclusion is shown through the delivery of each essential programme that we run. I find the most fulfilling aspect of my role to be the focus on engaging underrepresented talent. Knowing that every individual we worked with was set on track towards their biggest ambitions after facing barriers due to their identities and backgrounds is incredibly important to me, and dictates the pride I take in my work.

A regular day in the life for me would entail checking in on the programme I lead, and aiding and assisting my teammates in their focus areas. Our work is seasonal and follows a year long schedule, so the administrative and software-based work in March varies greatly to the event planning tasks of September. My team runs various development programmes for above-the-line talent in the entertainment industry. This includes a directors' programme, a writers' programme, and a short-form content production programme for filmmakers. Our work follows each programme from submission stage to delivery, and we manage the administration of all programmes, with each team member leading on a different one. I look after the writers' programme for which we partner with the production company Wall to Wall and the Royal Exchange Theatre. A typical day for me in running the writers' programme might look like checking in with participants, looking over legal agreements, booking guest speakers, liaising with our partners, and more.

Khyati Kalra

Graduate Intern for Internal Communications at WBD

This experience has been absolutely instrumental to my growth and development in not only my career but my personal development. It’s been a way through which I have been able to explore my interests in the media and entertainment industry, whilst also combining it with my passion for development and representation of people.

I find that the part of my role that fulfils me most is being able to engage and connect with people to showcase the stories that we all create together. The work my team and I do is extremely people focused, which means that we are fortunate enough to be able to see how the internal connection empowers everyone to build a product that creates dreams for our external audiences. We truly do believe and encourage the implementation of our brand guidelines, because they aren’t just words, they’re an ethos that empowers people to create and believe in themselves. I take pride in the fact that all the work I do with multiple departments allows me to make this difference.

I don’t particularly have a regular day, each day for me is unique and different due to the nature of events, stakeholder needs, title releases etc. The work in my team is very much so helping people in the business know what exactly is going on in terms of the wider business units. This may mean that one day I am assisting with setting up a town hall, or the next I will be developing competitions for title releases, and some days I am working with the PR and marketing teams to devise activation plans. It’s exciting, interesting, and definitely busy, but worth every single moment.

Tallulah Allen

EMEA Publicity Graduate Intern

I work as the EMEA Publicity Grad Intern, which is such an exciting role. I lend a hand organising and carrying out press tours for our upcoming releases, planning activations and events, and keeping up to date with press coverage. I studied French, Spanish and Management at university, so it has been especially enjoyable to work with markets across the EMEA region, as I loved working abroad as part of my degree and my job at WBD has the same international perspective.

There have been so many incredible releases since I joined the team last August – I particularly enjoyed working on Wonka at the end of the year, as this was my first experience at a global junket, so I loved getting to see the mechanics of a publicity tour stop first-hand. This year, I’m especially looking forward to Dune: Part Two and Challengers getting underway, as these are two films that I am SO excited to see, they are going to be amazing!

I love how reactive publicity teams have to be to the wider film industry and its events – it is so important for us to keep updated with what is happening outside of WBD and ensure that our plans are aligned with current affairs. The unpredictability of what may influence our actions keeps us on our toes and our jobs exciting! It is also lots of fun to work with press outlets that I am passionate about as a consumer – reading reviews or features of our films in newspapers and magazines that I have grown up buying is for sure a highlight.

Go for it! Make sure that you make your passion and enthusiasm for film known, particularly for Warner and its releases, and use the skills you have gained at university and in extracurriculars to demonstrate that you can think on your feet and complete tasks proactively. This can even be through your own film reviews or social media activity. Warner has been such a great company to be at over the past half a year and the graduate internship has taught me so much about working in the entertainment industry - I would definitely recommend applying to anyone who has an interest in the business of film!
