Tell us a bit about yourself

I am a third seat trainee at CMS, currently sitting in the Energy & Infrastructure team in Aberdeen.

I studied Law with English Law (LLB) and the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice (DPLP) at the University of Aberdeen prior to commencing my traineeship.

Why did you go into law?

I have always enjoyed intellectual challenges and problem-solving, and law seemed like the perfect field to apply these skills. I also was deeply motivated by the potential to effect change. Whether it was advocating for individual rights or supporting businesses in navigating complex situations, I saw the legal profession as offering numerous avenues to make a difference.

Tell us a bit about your experience at CMS/working in law?

I came to CMS after applying for the CMS Academy following the completion of my LLB. This consisted of two weeks of hands-on experience in the Corporate Transactions team in the Aberdeen office and one virtual week centred around enhancing commercial awareness and understanding the business side of law.

As a third seat trainee, my experience has been incredibly diverse and rewarding. I had the opportunity to go on a client secondment to bp as my first seat, which gave me an invaluable insight into the client’s perspective and helped me understand their needs and challenges firsthand. Following that, I spent time with the Infrastructure, Construction and Energy Disputes team in the office as my second seat, where I worked on complex and high-profile litigations. I have now joined the Energy & Infrastructure team and am looking forward to getting involved in some exciting projects.

Each seat has offered unique learning opportunities and has played a crucial role in developing my legal expertise. The opportunities that arise working at a global law firm like CMS are endless.

What is the culture like at the firm?
