Tell us a bit about yourself, your name, what programme did you join at SSE and when, what location are/were you based in?
My name is Rowanne Simpson, I joined the Technology Graduate Scheme at SSE in September 2020 and I am based in Perth.
What did you study at university and what university do you/did you attend/what year group?
I studied MSci Mathematics at Lancaster University (2016-2020)
Which sectors did you consider applying to for your graduate or placement role and what made you choose SSE and the area you are now working in?
It was on a summer internship that I developed an interest in technology however I considered a wide range of sectors when applying for a technology graduate scheme. I ultimately chose SSE because it is acknowledged as a fair and inclusive employer, something that I value highly and I wanted to be a part of SSEs journey in reaching a low carbon future. The Technology Graduate Scheme offers the opportunity to move across various business units, providing exposure to various aspects of the energy industry while building on experience in different IT roles.
How did you find the recruitment process? Do you have any advice for students considering applying for the SSE Graduate Programmes/Summer Placements?
The recruitment process has several stages and throughout the process, I felt supported. I would suggest do your research via the SSE website if you are new to the energy industry as there is a lot of information there. Practice online tests until you feel comfortable with them and take your time and prepare for each stage.
Did you require any adjustments during the selection process and would you be happy to share what support you received.
Yes, I required extra time during the online tests and the group exercise at the assessment centre.
Tell us a bit about your current role, what you’ve learnt and what you’ve enjoyed most.
I'm currently in my second 6-month placement which is as a Business Analyst in SSE Business Energy IT. This role has allowed me to engage with various stakeholders in the business, and I have to say my favourite part is the people in the team.
