Tell us a bit about yourself
From a young age I was always very curious about the world and had a passion for problem-solving. I enjoyed a variety of subjects, such as History to understand how cultures were shaped, and Biology to understand how the world works. I wanted to go into a field that would provide me with a wide range of learning opportunities, and I felt like law would provide that.
I also really enjoy practical learning. Therefore, I decided an apprenticeship was the right route for me. I had worked in various different jobs from the age of 16 and had always really enjoyed a work environment.
Why did you go into law?
I had an interest in law from a young age, as I was fascinated by how legal systems shaped societies. In secondary school, I had the opportunity to be involved in a number of schemes aimed at students interested in law. I participated in UNIQ and the Sutton Trust, which gave me insight into studying law and made my desire to do so stronger. I also participated in Prime, which culminated in work experience at a law firm in London, and reaffirmed my desire to be a solicitor.
Tell us a bit about your experience at CMS/working in law?
I am now in my 6th year of my apprenticeship at CMS. I have been lucky to work in a variety of legal teams such as Real Estate, Finance, Insurance and Energy. Everyday is different and I am constantly learning something new. I have had the opportunity to attend various client events and to travel to our other offices. I also had the opportunity to work for a client for 6 months. The experience I have had has been invaluable and I have really enjoyed my time so far.
What is the culture like at the firm?
CMS’ culture is one of the highlights of working at CMS. Everyone is very approachable and friendly at all levels. I feel supported in my career and learning journey. Work life balance is very much encouraged and the ability to work flexibly helps with this. I feel empowered to contribute to the firm and I have been involved with many different networks, including the Women’s Network. There are also plenty of opportunities to be involved in pro bono work and social mobility initiatives, such as the CMS scholarship scheme.
What essential piece of advice have you learnt whilst working at CMS?
To remain adaptable. The work at CMS changes on a daily basis and you need to be prepared to deal with any changes as they happen. This is especially important when juggling studying alongside working, as deadlines and responsibilities can often conflict. Clear communication also helps with this as it ensures everyone is aware of any changes and can then assist in managing workload.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work at CMS and I am looking forward to completing my final year, before qualifying. I would advise anyone who is interested in doing an apprenticeship to reach out to current apprentices at the firm you are looking to apply to.
