Meet Claire - Future Trainee at Goodwin

I’m currently in my final year of Law at the LSE. Prior to university, I grew up in California before moving to Singapore, where I completed most of my schooling. Outside of school, I am passionate about giving back to society, having spearheaded various grassroots and volunteering events. Studying law has therefore enabled me to continue doing so in a meaningful way, and I have thus been actively working with various pro bono organisations in university.

What inspired you to apply for this role with Goodwin? / What is the company culture like?

Goodwin has grown exponentially over the past few years, and I was inspired to join a firm that placed as much emphasis on its business growth as it did on retaining a strong, supportive and collegiate culture. Goodwin’s specialism in key growth industries not only makes for exciting, complex work, but also contributes to a growth culture that supports every individual’s professional development. These are factors I believe would be the most important for me in my formative years as a lawyer, and Goodwin therefore seemed to be the best place to learn and develop myself professionally.

How important is diversity to you and what is Goodwin doing in this space at the moment?

Having lived in multiple countries and interacting with people from vastly different backgrounds, I have always valued the breadth of perspectives that every individual brings as a result of their own unique experiences. Diversity is therefore of personal importance to me, and Goodwin’s commitment to diversity has been especially evident. This can be seen all the way to the top, with Goodwin being the first AmLaw 100 law firm to be headed by a woman. Beyond the multiple initiatives and affinity groups that Goodwin has kickstarted, what I found particularly significant is that the emphasis on diversity is genuinely a part of Goodwin’s culture. Even as a future trainee, I have had the opportunity to voice my opinions about issues pertaining to diversity with partners, highlighting the firm’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and the ability for all members of the firm to contribute to the discussion.

Finally, any tips for anyone who’d like to apply for a role at Goodwin?

Take the time to really learn about the firm through speaking to people at Goodwin, such as through career and networking events, and consider what these conversations reflect about our culture. Beyond that, interest and enthusiasm go a long way, and it is definitely a plus to develop a keen sense of commerciality and an understanding of the industries Goodwin’s clients operate in.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to let your personality shine, and bring your best self to the firm!
