We spoke to Laura Guzman, who last year received The Worshipful Company of Insurers Scholarship and is currently studying an MSc at Bayes Business School.
Please tell us a little about yourself
I am Laura Guzman Patino, originally from Colombia and have been living in the UK for a couple of years. Through hard work, dedication, and working part-time, I have learned English. After completing a BTEC Level 3 in Business, I pursued my studies in International Business at the University of Westminster. Following three years of dedicated effort, I graduated in 2022. Currently, in 2023, I am pursuing an MSc in Insurance and Risk Management at City, University of London, thanks to a scholarship awarded by The Worshipful Company of Insurers (WCI) and Bayes Business School.
How did you hear about the scholarship?
I learned about the scholarship thanks to Bright Network. It all started when I completed my employability award in the last year of my BA Hons degree. Part of the steps to obtain the award were to take a course on the Bright Network Academy platform. I took the Core Career Skills course, and at the end of it Bright Network continued to send me notifications of courses, job opportunities and study opportunities that they considered fit my profile. Thanks to these notifications I learned about the scholarship that I am now doing, and I feel blessed for it.
What was the application process like?
The application process was easy, I just had to send my degree, resume/CV, personal statement and answer some questions about myself and my interests. During the process, I always had the support of the team at The Worshipful Company of Insurers (WCI) and Bayes Business School, which made the process more pleasant.
What has the scholarship enabled you to do?
The scholarship has afforded me the opportunity to study alongside an exceptional group of professors and engage with outstanding classmates from whom I have learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the teamwork. Furthermore, I have been assigned a tutor who provides me with valuable advice and supports me throughout my study journey.
How have you found your course at Bayes?
The course at Bayes has been a gratifying experience. It is enriched with activities such as talks, conferences, and guest professors that enhance the learning process and broaden knowledge. Furthermore, the university facilities contribute to fostering a positive learning environment. Moreover, the modules that we study within the MSc course are highly comprehensive and well-integrated.
What piece of advice would you have for anyone cosndering applying?
For anyone wishing to apply for this scholarship, I would advise ensuring that the necessary documentation, including the degree certificate and visa or residence permits, is prepared in advance to expedite the process. However, it's important to note that the application process is straightforward, so there is no need to worry about it being burdensome.
