Matt Cawley – Intern
Tell us a little about yourself and your experience?
I joined Accuracy as a summer intern in the Project Advisory and Disputes team midway through my Civil Engineering studies. My previous onsite experience in engineering allowed me to deepen my understanding of the causes of project delays and gain valuable insight into best practices for mitigating delays in future projects.
What stood out to you about Accuracy?
For me, Accuracy was the perfect company to Intern at. It is large enough to offer great experience, learning from some of the leading experts in their field, but small enough that you never feel overlooked as an intern. The buddy/mentor system makes you feel at home straight away and regular scheduled 1:1 chats with senior team members allows you to get to know the entire team.
What 3 top tips would you give to Bright Networks members looking to secure a role at Accuracy?
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It really is the best way to learn.
- Work on developing your ability to process and learn new things quickly. Since no two projects are ever the same, the faster you can adapt and understand the specifics of each one, the more likely you are to succeed.
- Trust in your abilities. Regardless of your role, you bring a unique perspective to every problem or piece of work. If you have an idea for improving a task, share it with the team. Either your suggestion helps solve the issue, or you gain insight on a more effective approach for the future.
Were you surprised about anything from the application process or when working at Accuracy?
I was pleasantly surprised with the level of responsibility I was given as an intern. Once I became familiar with a project, I was entrusted with tasks that would directly contribute to analysis, which boosted my confidence and kept me motivated. I was also fortunate enough to participate in client workshops and meetings which gave me valuable insight into the company’s professional interactions and client-facing side.
What do you enjoy most about working at Accuracy?
Definitely the people! From day 1, everyone made me feel welcomed. The office culture is very social and friendly, with regular monthly socials and informal self-organised events. In an industry where the work can be intense and workload demanding, it’s essential to have colleagues you enjoy being around. There were even times I looked forward to coming into the office on a Monday morning. As I head back to University for another two years, I plan to stay in touch with as many people from the office as possible.
