We’ve been catching up with some of our current trainees about how they came to find themselves on our teacher training programme, the challenges they’ll be facing along the way and what extra value they’re looking to gain from this fantastic experience.
In this week’s ‘Trainee Talks’ blog, we spoke with Chemistry teacher trainee Channei about her mission to inspire young black students and increase representation in the sciences!
What inspired you to start a career in teaching?
“After my degree, I felt an overwhelming need to inspire the next generation of young black girls to become scientists! Black students across the country have a real lack of representation as none of their teachers look like them. I want to be that relatable figure in their life.”
“If Miss Bain has a science degree, I can get one too” is what I want all the little girls that look like me to leave my classroom thinking.”
What would you say you were looking forward to most about the course?
“I was most looking forward to getting stuck in! Particularly meeting all my students, watching their brains working, and seeing smiles on their faces when all their hard work starts to finally make sense in their heads!”
Ark’s teacher training programme places all their trainees in a school right from the start giving you valuable hands-on experience from day one. What do you think your biggest challenge has been?
“I feel the biggest challenge is learning how to support all of the scholars in the classroom and using positive techniques to keep the class engaged. Friday last period will be a challenge!”
Lastly, aside from teaching qualifications, what else are you looking forward to getting out of your experience with Ark Teacher Training?
“I will be working in a school with many EAL (English Additional Language) students, so I’m looking forward to developing my explaining techniques and visual cues to be able to communicate with students of all English language abilities!”
