Ben - IT Graduate Profile

Ben, an IT Graduate from Bournemouth University, shares with us his experiences working at SSE.

I’m Ben, an IT Graduate who joined SSE with the September 2022 intake following completion of my BSc (Hons) in Cyber Security Management. I have gained a wide range of experience, as well as learnt and developed new skills in a short amount of time with the company. During my first placement in Enterprise IT as a Business Relationship Manager, I had the opportunity to try my hand at project initiation, project management, and work with stakeholders across the business unit; Electric Vehicles, Solar and Battery and Heat Networks are a few of the areas I thoroughly enjoyed working with.

I’m now in Cyber Risk and Information Security with the Threat Detection Response Team where I am gaining experience as a Security Analyst. I investigate incidents, improve the efficiency and value of our security tooling, continue to learn more about investigation and response every day and work with stakeholders to keep SSE safe through minimising cyber risk.

Looking back as I’m approaching a year with SSE, my highlight so far has been meeting, working with, and learning from people who have diverse backgrounds and careers. Examples include working with stakeholders on varying phases of project delivery such as solar and battery site design, construction, and asset management, as well as IT colleagues in security, procurement, and architecture. I’ve learnt a vast amount from the placement managers and mentors who I’ve had the pleasure of working with during the scheme.

Mental health is a passion for me, and SSE shares this value by promoting an inclusive and welcoming culture with a vast number of free resources available to all employees. I sought an opportunity to expand my skills and professional development through external training, by becoming a recognised Mental Health First Aider, which has enabled me to support my colleagues. I’ve found great satisfaction volunteering on behalf of SSE for various STEM activities, such as mock interviews and presentations. They are easy to sign up for and there are always new opportunities being promoted.
