I chose to do my placement at SMBC Group because of its strong reputation in the financial services industry and its commitment to innovation and integrity. The chance to gain hands on experience in internal audit and to be a part of a team that ensures the company operates efficiently and in compliance with regulations is an exciting prospect for my career development.

Andrew

My job involves...

As an intern in the Internal Audit team, my job involves assisting with audit planning, risk assessments and the execution of audit control testing. I help evaluate the design frameworks and effectiveness of internal controls across various departments and functions within the bank. I also assist on documenting audit findings, analysing data and hosting walkthroughs with stakeholders who usually consist of Vice Presidents, Executive Directors, and Managing Directors. This exposure has not only given me valuable insights into the auditing process, but also regular exposure to various departments and senior management within the bank, as well as an opportunity to learn how internal controls contribute to the overall governance of the company.

On a typical day...

It is quite difficult to assign a typical day within Internal Audit as everyday differs significantly across the different stages of audit especially where I am fortunate enough to work in a manner whereby, I am treated as proper Internal auditor. However, over the course of an Audit I start by reviewing any assigned control testing and compile any audit evidence which usually occurs during planning, I then host or attend walkthrough meetings with stakeholders either set up by myself or another staff auditor that help with my control testing all of which occurs during the fieldwork stage and document my testing throughout this period. Overall, I collaborate closely with both my team and other departments, ensuring I meet deadlines and contribute to the overall efficiently of the internal audit process.

What I enjoy most about my internship...

What I enjoy most about my internship is the opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment where I can apply my academic knowledge to real-world scenarios. The variety of tasks I am involved in keeps me engaged, and the exposure to different aspects of the business has been incredibly rewarding. I particularly appreciate the mentorship and feedback from senior auditors, which had helped me refine my skills and gain a deeper understanding of the internal audit function within the finance industry. I also greatly appreciate the opportunity to be treated as a proper staff auditor and not made to feel like an intern entirely which is something that is not common.

Top tips for future interns considering a placement at SMBC group...

My top tip for future interns considering a placement at SMBC group would come prepared to learn and be proactive. The work environment is fast paced, so having a positive, can-do attitude and a willingness to take on new challenges will set you up for success. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek feedback – it is the best way to grow professionally. Also, take advantage of the networking opportunities (especially in Internal Audit), and be open to learning from people in different roles and departments. Finally, stay organised and manage your time effectively, as you will often be juggling multiple tasks and deadlines.
