Tom is an Economics and Finance graduate from the University of Leeds. He secured a Investment Bank Graduate role at Berenberg in London, through Bright Network.
First, please tell us a little bit about yourself.
“I’ve always been fascinated by numbers and their ability to reveal compelling stories, which inspired me to pursue a degree in Economics and Finance. During my studies, I developed a strong interest in accounting and finance, leading me to apply for accounting placement years.
This experience provided valuable insight into the profession but also helped me realise that my true passion lay in financial markets. To explore this further, I undertook a summer internship at an asset management firm, where I gained exposure to the world of investing.
During this time, I had the opportunity to engage with professionals working in research roles at investment banks. I was captivated by their in-depth knowledge and the narratives they built around specific companies and sectors. This experience sparked my enthusiasm for investment banking, motivating me to apply for graduate roles in the field.”
What motivated you to apply for your role?
“I was drawn to applying to Berenberg because of the unique structure of its graduate programme, which stands out from other investment banking roles.
The rotational aspect particularly appealed to me, as it offers the opportunity to explore different divisions and discover where my strengths and interests align best.
Berenberg's reputation for producing exceptional work also played a significant role in my decision. The chance to learn from some of the most talented professionals in the industry is an invaluable opportunity to develop my skills and build a strong foundation for my career.”
What was the application process like?
“The application process at Berenberg was an enjoyable and engaging experience.
It was highly personal, involving multiple face-to-face rounds that allowed me to connect directly with the team.
This approach not only provided a clear understanding of the firm's culture but also gave me valuable insights into the people who work there and their roles.”
How did Bright Network help you secure your role?
“I was able to find the role and learn more about Berenberg on the Bright Network website.”
What are you most proud of about your journey?
“I'm most proud of being able to carry on applying despite various rejections. In doing so I was able to get this role at a great firm.”
What was your general application journey like?
“During my search for an industrial placement, I gained valuable insights into what companies look for in candidates. This experience helped me refine my approach when applying for graduate roles.
I dedicated significant time to researching the companies and roles I was interested in, ensuring my applications were tailored to positions I was genuinely excited about and felt best suited my skills and interests. This targeted approach not only increased my chances of success but also helped me focus on opportunities where I could thrive.
Interview preparation was the part I felt most apprehensive about, as investment banking interviews can be diverse and challenging. However, by leveraging various resources, such as YouTube videos and industry guides, I gained a clearer understanding of the types of questions typically asked. This preparation greatly boosted my confidence and made the interview process feel more manageable.”
What have you learned from going through the process?
“The process was very long, as I had expected, but what I really learned from applications is to not be downhearted when you receive a rejection.
It is important to remember that it is very competitive and to use any rejection as an opportunity to be better prepared for the next application.”
What are your tips for people looking to follow in your footsteps?
“My tip would be to properly research the firm and the role you’re applying to. It really saves you a lot of time by only applying to companies and roles that will be a good fit for you. Not only will it give you a deeper interest in the companies you’re applying to, but you’ll also see more success in your applications.
Another tip would be to just focus on yourself. Don't worry about others getting various roles before you. Just keep applying for the roles you’re interested in, it isn't a race to get a job as soon as you can, it's to find the job that is right for you and that you would enjoy being in.”
Tell us about the future. What’s next?
“As a part of the graduate programme, I will be rotating through various roles at the bank. I am excited to learn about the different positions that are on offer here at Berenberg and learn from different people.
At the end of the programme, I will then be placed in a permanent position where I hope to learn more not only about Berenberg but about markets more widely.”
