Meet Dylan, Data Analyst Graduate at QBE Insurance

Please can you introduce yourself and your role at QBE?

I’m Dylan and I’m a Data Analyst Graduate within the Data Centre of Excellence (DCOE) at QBE. My role consists of rotating through 3 different teams under the DCOE: Business Intelligence (BI), Data Excellence (DEX) and Data Solutions & Analysis in that respective order. I have completed 1 rotation in the BI team where I worked and gained experience as a Business Analyst. My work consisted of enhancing existing Power BI dashboards, creating SQL scripts to provide automation for the business and general business queries on the team’s inbox. I am currently in the DEX team, where I have just finished working as a Data Quality Analyst, spearheading the Data Quality Issue Management process. I was in charge of the backlog of Data Quality tickets and worked with the business to reduce the number of issues through the form of workshops and collaboration. I am due to start working as a Data Governance Analyst in this team, gaining experience in Collibra and PowerApps. In addition to this, I own and manage the requirements for the Power BI dashboard that the DEX uses for their reporting.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The cross collaboration between all teams in the Data Centre of Excellence. I have the added benefit of being rotated through all 3 teams, but even then, the DCOE feels like one big team. The positive relationships between each team and their members truly highlighted how welcoming the DCOE is. I feel that I can go to any member in the DCOE and ask for help and guidance at all times. Successes are always highlighted as well, with everyone also praising those that work hard and deliver excellent work.

Recently, within the DEX team specifically, I have had to reach out and network with many people within the business. This has been very enjoyable as I am always learning about the different tasks people have to do, and how their work impacts the business as a whole. It is truly eye opening to see how many people work together to get the cogs moving.

What achievement would you say you’re most proud since working at QBE?

When I was nominated and won an award at our department wide Town Hall for the work I had delivered in the BI team. I was super proud of myself for delivering that piece of work and having ownership over it, and to have that success highlighted not just in front of my managers and team, but also the whole department was one of my key accomplishments so far at QBE.

What does a typical day look like for you?

A typical day for me currently is logging for 9am and instantly starting with a team catchup. Having a quick chat with everyone and asking each other how we are all feeling and what our plans for the day are really switches you on first thing in the morning. I will then check my calendar and plan my day according to the meeting schedule I have for that day. If I am not in meetings or running workshops, I am usually conducting analysis pieces or collaborating with key stakeholders to progress Data Quality issues.

I am lucky to be able to do a Masters Apprenticeship at QBE as well, so for 1 day a week, I am contracted to complete my study hours. This is where I will attend my weekly (or fortnightly) university workshop, and then complete the rest of the hours by going through the course content or working on my assignments. It sounds like a lot, but QBE honours these contracted hours perfectly. I have been told countless times to not work or book meetings during my study hours as that is my precious time to do my university work!

What would be your advice to someone considering applying?

Of course, do your research, but just go for it. I joined QBE not knowing a thing about insurance other than having to pay off my car insurance each year. The amount my insurance knowledge has increased within just a year is insane, and I am still learning every day.

QBE is a great place to work, and they have a strong set of values, called the DNA values, that are adhered to by all. Do you research on these values to understand exactly what type of character QBE is looking for. If you research the company values and believe they all are reflective of your character, then do not hesitate to apply. It does not matter what background or field you are from, you will be joining a diverse workplace full of creative and inspiring people that will truly make you feel valued. It is a super flexible workplace, with a magnitude of opportunities for growth.
